SENIOR GIRLS NETBALL

On Monday the Senior Girls Netball team competed at the Southern Metro Region Finals. They had some tough competition coming up against SEDA, Mac.Robertson and Cranbourne East in their group. The McKinnon squad out played all these teams defeating them all by over 15 goals in some tightly contested games.

The squad then met Koo Wee Rup in the Grand Final. This was an outstanding display of Netball with the team defeating their opponents 29-14 to take home the pennant. The squad will now progress to State Finals on Monday 4 September.

Well done to all members of the squad and good luck for State Finals.

The McKinnon team performed admirably throughout the day and had the opportunity to play against traditional heavyweights such as Mac.Robertson Girl HS and Nossal HS in the region. Unfortunately, they could not overcome their more experienced opponents, losing both encounters. As a result, they were unable to advance to the next phase of the competition.

However, the team did manage to pick up 2 wins on the day and came 4th overall. Well done everyone!

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS BADMINTON

The Southern Metro Region Badminton was a fun and enjoyable experience. From school trainings to the Kingston divisions, and to the SMR finals, at each round we played with talented and skilful opponents. All teams from McKinnon played impressively and did a great job on all the competitions.

The girls team stood undefeated in the division round, hence we were lucky enough to go to the regional finals at Springers Leisure Centre and compete against other schools across the region.

Through this badminton competition, each and every one of us have gained a lot. During the selection process, people cheered as they got selected to be in the A team, while others regretted that they were almost selected. During the competition, we encountered many hardships while playing against other schools. But we all had fun and finished the game after all.

This was a great opportunity and experience for every one of us as we had the chance to improve our badminton skills and as well as socialise with the other schools.

We all enjoyed the SMR badminton tournaments, and it was well received by all participants across the team.

YEAR 7 BOYS SOCCER SMR FINALISTS

Year 7 boys drew their final game of the year to unfortunately miss the final on goal difference.

Earlier they beat Cheltenham 4 goals to 1 with Sarvin Pawar and Xavier Khreish proving their super boot status and Jaden Leshetz  hitting the back of the net twice.

Archie Braithwaite saved the day in goals in the final game against Cranbourne East while Luke Min Fa and the rest of the defensive unit were resolute. A shout out to Kevin Duong who played Volleyball and Soccer in the same day to put himself in contention for a Year 7 Sport Award.

Congratulations and commiserations go to the boys who went their whole year undefeated but missed out purely on goal difference.

DUKE OF ED - Student Reflections

I found the Term 2 Duke of Edinburgh hike was a great experience. The majority of the hike was in the mountains where there were many tall trees and bushes. Near the end we saw some farm animals in a nearby farm and a few horses. Some trails were quite narrow and hard to walk through whilst others were extremely steep and rocky, which made it harder to climb. The weather was really cold which was a huge advantage because I was never too hot and exhausted.

On this hike, I bought around 4-5 bottles of water and a few packets of snacks such as chips, chocolates and energy bars so that I had enough energy to complete the hike and stay hydrated during the walk. I enjoyed this hike because I was able to walk with my friend for the majority of the hike and just walk at a good pace. When I finished the first day, I was so excited to enjoy my noodles and go to bed as I was exhausted. The hike ended a lot quicker than I expected and before I knew it, the bus was right there waiting to pick us up!

I found the second hike to be easier than the first but it was still quite hard though due to the very steep hills in the first half. I enjoyed walking with Danielle who kept me well entertained. The hike allowed me to talk to people that I haven't before and also strengthened some friendships that I had already created early in the year. I also loved the environment that we were in and found it interesting. When we finally reached the camp at Aireys Inlet, it was so comforting to know that the most difficult part was over and I was eager to go to sleep because I was completely exhausted. The highlight of the hike was definitely when we finally reached the end! It was so rewarding and comforting to know that it was over and I felt very proud of myself.
