FRENCH MODEL UN

On Thursday 20 July, the VCE French class made their way to North Melbourne to participate in this year’s French Model UN. We made an early start to our day by arriving at school by 7:15am so we could arrive at the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership to start the day’s important discussion: Climate change.

McKinnon had the honour of representing France and Costa Rica, and both teams spent the day discussing with other teams and countries all options available to improve the model UN’s amendments, to make sure we could hit the UN’s goal to be carbon neutral by 2050. All discussions, addresses to the secretary general and debates were in French and urged the delegates to push beyond classroom walls, venture into new territories, and use new vocabulary in order to help solve our climate crisis. The whole day was a big success with both Costa Rica and France taking part in meaningful discussions and making strong allyships in order to change amendments to help our planet.

Both countries walked away with a great amount of new found knowledge and confidence in preparation for the upcoming French speaking exam, and took part in thought provoking and important discussions.

Thank you to all the students involved and to Monsieur Chamontin for organising and encouraging us to take part in this amazing experience!

GERMAN MODEL UN

Greetings, language enthusiasts!

On Tuesday 18 July, an unforgettable event took place, bringing together German language enthusiasts from across Victoria for a remarkable Model UN Conference hosted by UNAAV. The topic of the day was "Planet Ozean," and it proved to be an enriching experience for all the Victorian VCE students studying German.

The conference provided a unique platform for students to hone their language skills while engaging in meaningful discussions about environmental issues impacting our planet's oceans. Participants embraced their roles as delegates, representing various countries, and passionately debated solutions to tackle ocean pollution, conservation, and sustainable practices.

The German Language Model UN Conference not only challenged students' language proficiency but also fostered collaboration, critical thinking, and diplomacy. The delegates were immersed in a stimulating environment that encouraged them to express their ideas, make alliances, and negotiate resolutions in German, further enhancing their language fluency and confidence.

The event's success can be attributed to the enthusiastic participation of our talented students and the expert guidance of teachers and facilitators. The combination of language learning and global awareness made the conference an invaluable experience for everyone involved.

If you are a German language student seeking an exciting and meaningful opportunity to refine your language skills and delve into crucial global topics, we highly recommend participating in the next UNAAV German Language Model UN Conference. Keep an eye out for future announcements and make sure to be a part of this incredible language and cultural experience.

Vielen Dank to all who contributed and participated!

FRENCH CONVERSATION PROGRAM

Bonjour,

I'm thrilled to share some exciting news with you all - introducing the French Conversation Programme! This is not your typical classroom experience; instead, it's a fantastic opportunity for our Year 12 French students to immerse themselves in the language right here within our school.

Every Tuesdays at lunchtime, our Year 12 French students are paired with our native French-speaking classmates. Together, we engage in captivating conversations, honing their conversational skills, and gaining invaluable insights into French culture and idiomatic expressions.

The programme aligns perfectly with the VCE French curriculum, allowing them to delve deeper into the topics with the help of our native speakers' fluency. At the same time, we French-speaking students get a glimpse of the VCE French exam format and structure, which could prove beneficial for our own studies.

To everyone involved in the programme, let's approach these sessions with an open mind, a ready smile, and an appetite for learning. I'm confident it will be a win-win experience for all. Bonne chance to everyone! Merci.

FRENCH YEAR 12 BERTHE MOUCHETTE COMPETITION

On Tuesday 25 July, the Year 12 French class took part in the Berthe Mouchette Competition to practise for their end of year exams. There were oral and written components that were completed, and they were both challenges for the Year 12 students but beneficial for their French learning. The oral exam was a replica of the end of year exam as it focused on a general conversation which tested our language skills as well as a discussion on a certain topic that challenged our understanding of French culture. It was an enriching experience and we all felt accomplished after even though the lead up to it was stressful. We all feel much closer to being prepared for the real exams and we feel ready for the challenges that will face us in the future!

YEAR 7 GERMAN POETRY COMPETITION

All German students in Year 7 are currently studying a German poem of their choice to be selected for the AGTV German Poetry Competition. The challenge to memorize and recite a poem does not only challenge students, but it also demands a considerable amount of effort and determination to succeed.

Students have also been introduced to FLIP, an online recording program that allows students to record a video while reciting their poem. Appropriate pronunciation and intonation of the poems were practised in class and students are encouraged to listen to sound files provided on the Year 7 German Google site perfecting their presentation. They are also asked to use appropriate body language to emphasize their expression.

We are very much looking forward to their entries this week to select the best performers for the regional final.

The Year 7 German teachers will keep you informed about further developments.

GOETHE COMPETITION WINNER - FIFA FRAUEN-WELTMEISTERSCHAFT 2023

Congratulations to Ava Muelu (Year 10) who during the last holidays competed in the TICKET GIVEAWAY: FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP 2023.

Ava showed off her love for the game by submitting a short video of herself performing a fan chant in German.

There were only four winners each for the game in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney and Ava was lucky enough to win two tickets to the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023.

On Monday, 24 July, Ava attended GERMANY - MOROCCO in the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium with her dad and watched Germany win 6-0.

Congratulations, Ava, on extending yourself beyond the classroom work and making the most of the opportunities offered.

YEAR 10 GERMAN - UNTERNEHMEN DEUTSCH - ENTERPRISE GERMAN

The Year 10 German class is working this term on a project offered by the GOETHE INSTITUT called Unternehmen Deutsch - Enterprise German. It connects school students and German companies or Australian companies with a relationship to German speaking countries within the Asia Pacific region. The project combines aspects of professional orientation with creativity and innovation.

Students research the economic region, learn about industries and businesses that are German subsidiaries or companies that were founded by Germans in Australia. They present their findings in a first presentation.

A second presentation, focusing on the chosen partner business that students collaborate with, follows after an interview is conducted with a representative of the company to collect information and ideas to create a service or product for this business.

A third presentation will be focussing on the development of a service or product that the company could consider.

Module 1: Our economic area

Module 2: Our partner company

Module 3: Our business idea

Materials provided by the GOETHE INSTITUT serve as the basis for the learning in the three modules. The participation in this idea contest could be rewarded with prizes.

I am looking forward to our Year 10’s contributions this year.
