Digital Safety and STEM @ St Louis

Cybersafety Update

Once we are all here at school together, we look forward to welcoming back our friends from Inform and Empower to work with our children exploring Cyberstafety and Digital Safety.

We are all so proud of our students and families and how you have all adapted to being online using devices much more than ever before. You've all demonstrated respect to your friends and teachers and are becoming amazing digital citizens.

Parents, if you want to gain a little more insight into the work of Inform and Empower, or perhaps get some quick, helpful hints we highly recommend their blog which can be found here https://www.informandempower.com.au/blog.

It's also worthwhile checking out their Facebook page for regular updates about what's going on in the world of cybersafety right now.

For now, keep being kind online, talk to trusted adults if you see something that makes you feel unsafe and also...

As always, if you come across anything about digital safety that you feel would benefit others, feel free to email through to twood@stlouisaspendale.com.

In our STEM learning with year 5 and 6 over the past few weeks, we've been exploring technology, and in particular, the misconception that technology is always connected to something digital.

Students have began to identify that technological developments are about making life easier for people, or improving their quality of life.

Year 6

Through their title of 'Is Necessity the Mother Of All Invention', Year 6 have begun to look at key Australian inventiones including polymer bank notes, spray-on skin, and wi-fi )what would we do without these!?). This then led into us exploring iconic Australian problems such as 'the tomato sauce bottle is always clogged', or 'if I go surfing I'm sure I'll be attacked by a shark'. We even tried to come up with ways we could solve the boiling hot pie conundrum you get when you go to the footy!

As you can see, all relevant things that we could try and solve to make life better! Students began to use a process called ideation to brainstorm creative ideas to solve it. Here's just one example below.

It's been so much fun watching them think critically and creatively. We can't wait to see where their learning goes next.

Year 5

Through their title of 'How Technology Keeps Australia Connected', Year 5 began to look at some of the technologies developed by our First Nations people, thinking about what problems they were trying to solve.

This week we were lucky enough to work with Frank in the garden to create our own model Eel Traps. It was wonderful to see so many of our children learning some of the Aboriginal techniques for weaving, as well as seeing lots of our parents get involved.

Check out some of their creations:
