Learning in the Senior School

Year 12 SACE Examinations

The Exams for some of our students began last week. SACE conducts their Oral Language Examinations before the written / electronic exams. We have had students undertaking their oral exam, using Zoom, in Chinese, Spanish, French and Italian. Each student had 20 minutes allocated, and much of the discussion revolved around the student’s ‘In-depth Study’. This year, SACE has added the languages to those exams to be undertaken electronically. Mathematics subjects will still be offered in paper form, as will Chemistry, Physics and Economics. The formal examination period for written and electronic exams is from Monday 1 to Friday 12 November. SACE has advised that Year 12 results will be released electronically, via Students Online, at 8.30am on Monday 13 December. We wish all of our students (including some Year 10 and 11 students taking Year 12 subjects) the best of luck as they approach this component of their formal schooling at Loreto.

Earth, Moon and Space Unit

As part of their Earth, Moon and Space unit, our Year 7 students have been learning about the Earth’s Moon and had a lot of fun representing the Phases of the Moon using Oreo biscuits!

Year 8 Inter-House Public Speaking Competition

At our Senior School Assembly this week, we held the final of our annual Year 8 Inter-house Public Speaking Competition. Our four finalists presented their speech inspired by our 2021 school value, Felicity. The following students represented their house in the final:

Anouska Hart (Barry)

Sophia Manning (McGrath)

Emma Choi (Mulhall)

Ruby Washbourne (Ward)

The final was a very high standard and our four finalists displayed confidence and used exceptional public speaking skills. They certainly presented many practical suggestions about the importance of ensuring that felicity is a part of our life.

Congratulations to our 2021 individual public speaking champion, Anouska Hart from Barry. Our 2021 House Shield winner is Mulhall. All Year 8 Mulhall students should feel very proud of their contribution towards this outcome.

The benefits of this competition is captured in the following reflection by Anouska:

“Public speaking was something I’d never thought of doing. I had always known that it was a critical life skill but never thought of going this far. I believe the year 8 public speaking competition was a great insight to what is to come in the future - the skill of speaking is vital. Overall, the public speaking competition allowed me to face my fears in a comfortable learning space, find a new skill and have a bit of fun.”

Year 7 Immersive Experience

Yr 7 students reducing CO2 levels as they sort rubbish in the virtual world of Trash Time. Thanks to Bec and Dave from Lumination who have taught us so much in Tinkercad and CoSpaces. With these skills, our 3D interactive solution to our problem statements based on Waste should be ready to submit to the CESA AR Challenge.
