Music with Emily

On Wednesday and Thursday this week all our students took part in an online music performance from Brisbane based group Topology. The music was played on violin, viola, double bass and alto and soprano saxophone.  The show – ‘Taking Shape’ explored how to use building blocks of music to create new pieces. The students learnt how every piece of music is made up of short musical ideas, also known as motifs. Topology referred to these short musical ideas as “shapes”; shapes that can be puzzled together in all sorts of interesting ways to create music. The musicians used ideas from our students for the lyrics and sounds of words to create new shapes that were then used to create a brand new composition – on the spot. Amazing!

Students working with Emily this term will become composers themselves as they use the ideas from this wonderful performance to inspire their own musical creations.
