Student Services Report
Debbie Edwards
Term 4 has been a continuation of onsite and remote learning. The wellbeing team are all back onsite checking in with students and planning for programs that will be starting up soon!
Doctors in Secondary School Program:
The wellbeing team received very exciting news regarding our application for the ‘Doctors in Secondary School’ Program. We have been successful!
The program will commence during Term 1 2022. Students will have access to a Doctor at school one day per week.
The Department of Education’s rationale behind the program is:-
- Adolescence is a peak period for emergence of health risks:
- Lifestyle behaviours
- Mental health
- Adolescents are the least likely of all ages to seek help
- Missed opportunities – early detection and health promotion may result in unmet physical, mental and preventative health care needs
- Establish a link between health and education outcomes
The Doctors in Secondary School Program details are:-
- Students have access to confidential care that is a fundamental component of youth friendly care
- The Doctor complements a range of school-based health and wellbeing services and programs
- For adolescents, confidentiality has been shown to:
- Increase comfort
- Reduce anxiety
- Increase trust
- Increase the likelihood of future visits
- Important to acknowledge the desire of parents to be involved whilst maintaining trust in the confidentiality of the GP consultation
The location of the Doctor’s Clinic is still being finalized and more details will come, but if any parent/carer has questions about the Doctors in Secondary School program, please contact Student Services Leader, Debbie Edwards on 8795 9400.
Breakfast Club:
We are so excited to announce that our Breakfast Club program will be returning on November 3rd, as our students return to full-time onsite learning! Breakfast Club runs every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:15am-8:45am in E Block.
Breakfast Club is a program that is designed to ensure that our students have a full stomach in the morning, which is proven to assist with brain functioning and learning throughout the day. It’s a great place for students to come and enjoy their morning meal with their friends.
We hope to see you there!

Reconnecting...
The student wellbeing team has been out at recess welcoming the students return to onsite learning. Students were welcomed with an assortment of snacks and water to make sure they had enough energy to get through their new routine! Students were happy to see their friends and catch up with peers in a relaxed and open environment. We look forward to seeing all year levels back shortly!
Refugee Education Support Program -Art Project:
This term the refugee education support program in conjunction with the centre for multicultural youth is running a series of art workshops for our students.
The workshops will run after school on a Wednesday from 2pm-3pm online from 3rd November. They will rotate between different art mediums such as painting, drawing, digital media, photography and more. Workshops will be run and led by Connections Art space facilitators along with a representative from student wellbeing.
Students who are interested can sign up with the link posted on compass. We only have 30 spots available for this program, all students who register will receive an art pack for FREE containing materials required for the workshops.
Students of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels are encouraged to apply for this opportunity. HPSC hope to run a showcase in 2022 to exhibit the artwork created in these sessions.
For more information please see Compass or Harlin Gandhok in wellbeing.
Rainbow Collective:
Throughout remote learning, we continued to run our Rainbow Collective group every Tuesday at lunch time. We got to hang out and play games like Pictionary and check-in with each other, which was very important during lockdown.
Rainbow Collective is a group that was formed in 2021, where members of our community who identify as LGBTIQA+, as well as allies, could come together and have a safe space to hang out and celebrate being who they are.
We were so glad to be back in person on Tuesday 26th October, where we were able to acknowledge Intersex Awareness Day. We can’t wait to continue our hang outs in person for the rest of this year and are looking forward to getting to have even more celebrations in 2022!
Transition:
In term 4 the college starts the year 6 – 7 transition process, preparing for the next class of Explore students in 2022. This exciting process has lots of opportunities for prospective Explore students to learn about the college – videos, virtual Q&A’s, the two college orientation days, and an additional half-day of transition activities for select students. Plenty more information will be coming out throughout the term, so make sure that you keep an eye on the college social media to find out the latest! If you are worried about your child’s move to HPSC, check out the resources on the transition section of the college website, or contact Jacqueline Binns from the Wellbeing team.
World Teachers' Day:
Australia celebrated and thanked the teaching profession on World Teachers’ Day on Friday 29 October 2021. Teachers (with support from parents and carers) have ensured education continues across the country this year, despite major challenges. It’s reinforced the significant role teachers play in the lives of children and students, their families, and communities.
Our student leaders prepared a wonderful video thanking the teachers of HPSC for their help in shaping their future. Check out the video here. Teachers all received a small token of appreciation for their dedication to teaching our students at HPSC.
Just a reminder that we remain fortunate to have the valuable services of Ms Mel Kemper, Psychologist who provides counselling to students under the Medicare Mental Health Care Plan. We are also supported by Maddy from Foundation House who can provide 1:1 support for students from a refugee background.
If you would like more information about supporting your child, please call 8795 9400 and ask for the wellbeing team.
