Teaching & Learning Hub

Welcome:
Welcome to our Teaching and Learning Hub!
We are very excited to be able to welcome back all of our students and staff to onsite learning! We are incredibly proud of our students and they way in which they were able to continue and demonstrate their learning, often in very creative and innovative ways. We are also incredibly proud of the commitment our staff have towards our students and of their flexibility and ingenuity in being able adapt their delivery of learning to an online format.
Over the past few weeks, it has been a most wonderful sight to see the gradual return of students to classrooms and other sites of learning. We are looking forward to seeing all of our students back on site and we believe that the rest of Term 4 will be a fantastic time of reengagement, reconnection, and reinvigoration for our entire HPSC learning community.
The following principles are being adopted by HPSC teaching staff during the transition of students from remote to onsite learning:
- To prioritise student reengagement in learning and wellbeing
- To provide learning opportunities for students that promote positive discussions and interactions with peers and teachers
- To be aware of the fatigue students may feel and to implement regular ‘brain breaks’ and ‘physical movement breaks’ in every lesson
- To ensure each classroom is a place where students are scaffolded to rebuild their confidence, their learning stamina, and their concentration
- To place a focus of importance of re-establishing or continuing to build students’ interpersonal skills, their sense of belonging, and their connection to HPSC
- To use simple activities and formative assessment to gain a clear understanding of where each student is in their learning as they return.
- To plan learning activities that acknowledge any number of students may feel a sense of stress and anxiety around the return to school
- To make it clear to students that our return to onsite learning offers a fresh start
- To make sure students feel welcome in every classroom and excited to be back at school regardless of their level of engagement in remote learning.
- In the case of our more senior students (Years 10 and 11), teachers will use their professional discretion to determine which learning tasks are vital for students to complete to ensure their success in 2022 as they work towards their Senior Secondary Certificate of Education
For a deeper understanding of our approach, please refer to this article from Monash University.
We are both invested in hearing the voice of students and parents and using this to help shape the future direction of learning at HPSC.

Assessment and Reporting Information for Term-Four:
As was the case for Term 3, teachers in all 7 to 10 subjects are adjusting Term Three Assessments in response to remote-learning and the transition to onsite learning. Teachers will still be reporting against the essential skills and knowledge outlined in the Victorian Curriculum Standards; however, the tasks teachers have asked students to complete will differ to those that would have been given during a full term of ‘normal’ onsite learning.
We understand that this sixth extended lockdown has been and continues to be a difficult time for many Victorians, including students, parents, and staff at Hampton Park Secondary College.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about assessment and reporting practices at Hampton Park Secondary College, please contact the school on 8795 9400.
Education Sub-Committee
Our return to onsite teaching and learning means that we will be able to move forward much more quickly and easier with our Education Sub-Committee. Please see the information below.
Would you like to have a direct influence in how teaching and learning happens at HPSC? We are still looking for some additional parent and carer volunteers to join our new Education sub-committee. The committee will meet at least once a term to discuss and plan for all things teaching and learning related at HPSC. For example, some questions to explore might include:
- What sort of information would you like to see on your child’s report?
- How can we improve the communication between parents and teachers?
If you would like to find out more, please contact Paul, we would love to have you on board!
Reporting Review
We have put the survey mentioned in our last survey on hold for the moment as the school priority is the smooth transition for our students from remote to face-to-face learning. We hope to have the survey (as outlined below) ready to send out to you in November.
We are currently reviewing the way we ‘do’ reporting at HPSC. We would love it if you could start to have a think about what information you would like to see on your child’s report. What is helpful for you to understand your child’s progress at school? What information do you think is missing at the moment that you would like to see included?
We will send out a survey to parents and carers at the start of Term Four so that we can get your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions.
Please feel free to email Paul or Mel directly at Paul.Broecker@education.vic.gov.au or Melanie.Larcombe@education.vic.gov.au. Alternatively, you can call the front office on 8795 9400, leave us a message and we will call you back. 😊
