Curriculum Matters

What’s happening in Maths
Year 7
Welcome back Year 7! This week sees our Year 7 students start to work through the Maths part of the STEM Project, Mission to Mars. Students are investigating the mathematics of Mars including such things as the temperature, the orbit, the distance from Earth and how long it would take to get there. As part of this project we will also be looking at the mathematics discussed in the movie/book “The Martian”. Students are also continuing to work through their Maths Pathway modules and should be doing some of this at home.
Year 8
Year 8 are starting to prepare for moving into Year 9 next year and are focusing on building skills in preparation. In particular, they are developing their calculator skills. It is important that your student bring their calculator to every lesson. They continue to work through Maths Pathway but their lessons will be supplemented with a workbook that concentrates on the skills required for Year 9, in particular percentages and algebra.
Maths in Year 9 breaks into three different pathways based on students' understanding of Maths at the end of Year 8. These pathways are 5.3, which is an algebra based pathway which traditionally leads students to Advanced and Extension Maths, which are more Calculus based courses, in Stage 6, 5.2, which focuses on Financial Mathematics and Measurement and traditionally leads students to Standard Maths in Stage 6 and 5.1 which is designed to further develop students basic Maths skills and prepare them for Numeracy or Standard Maths in Stage 6.
