LitSTEM

Over Term 3 the Year 4’s have been attending Kilbreda as part of our LitSTEM project, which has just come to a completion.  All Year 4 students had an amazing time and enjoyed conducting experiments in Kilbreda’s science lab.  However, the highlight of the program was our last session this week where the students ‘finally’ got to use the bunsen burner to make a spinning snake.  We would like to thank Kilbreda for hosting our LitSTEM sessions and for working with us to strengthen the connection between the two schools.  Talks have already begun to continue this program into 2023.

Visual Arts

In 5/6 we have been creating our very own 'bots'.  We used Gary Hirsh, an American artist as our inspiration.  Mrs Kimball contacted Gary Hirsch and showed him some of our amazing work.  He was so impressed and loved our work so much that he posted it on his Instagram account!  You should be very proud George T!

Enhancement Groups

Last week in enhancement group the Year 5/6 students responded to a mathematical problem using a quote from a very famous Russian writer - Leo Tolstoy.  He wrote well known novels such  as War & Peace and Anna Karenina. Leo Tolstoy passed away in 1910 at the age of 82.  His quote reads:

“A person is like a fraction whose numerator is what they are and whose denominator is what they think of themselves. The larger the denominator the smaller the fraction” - Leo Tolstoy

Who are you and why do you think you are that fraction?

We had a very rich discussion. Firstly we shared what we thought the quote meant and then how it relates to the fractional images. We shared what we knew to help others who were unsure if their thoughts were correct.

Some of our responses with feedback about the problem are included below:

Why?

I'm 'b' because what I think I am is what I am and I don't care about anyone else's judgements - Kayleigh

Why?

I think I'm b because personally I don't feel the need to meet other people's judgement or overly impress them unless it is for a rational reason.

R U OK? Day

September 8 is R U OK? Day. It is our national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, “Are you OK?” and support those struggling with life's ups and downs. We began the day with prayer (over the loudspeaker), led by our Liturgy and Social Justice team. Each child then reflected during mediation using mindful colouring the results of which will be used in a display outside the Art Room.
