YEAR 11 CLASSY DISCO CHARITY SOCIAL

By Annie McDowell (Year 11 Team Leader)

On Friday night the Year 11s attended a 'Classy Disco Charity Social' to raise funds for the Cancer Council, as a sign of solidarity for staff and community members living with a cancer diagnosis.

We decked out the BHCS restaurant with all things 'Disco', and enjoyed a catered meal cooked by Mr Booth and the Year 12 Hospitality Team.

Students had the opportunity to enter 'funtivities' for a gold coin donation. We played musical chairs, had a Richard Simmons dance-off, listened to our awesome student band, had a karaoke competition (with Hamilton tickets as the grand prize!) and danced the night away. We also enjoyed a speech from one of our student representatives, who shared some of her family's journey with cancer, and how the Cancer Council have supported them.

It was an all-around classy, fun and community-building event. We thank the student leaders for all their hard work in making it happen!

LIFE LESSONS WITH CLAY

By Judy Woods (Art Coordinator)

Many life lessons can be learnt from working with clay. While students design what they would like to make, through the creative process they learn to adapt their ideas and expectations, be flexible, solve problems and at the end of day, let the inherent qualities of the clay speak for itself.

Year 9/10 Ceramics students were given the task of designing and making a ‘Whimsical non-functional teapot’. The inspiration for their teapots was their most treasured childhood memories, memories they look back on with delight. The teapot had to be imaginative, playful, curious, and fun and while the pot was to be non-functional, the design had to include a handle & a spout, but the rest was up to the imagination of the students.

Students were also given the task of designing a ‘Figurine’. This task allowed or the development of more advanced construction techniques. Balance was the key challenge of this task and contrast was explored by keeping the form simple and letting the glaze be the ‘star of the show’.

The art room is a wonderful place where students share ideas, inspire, and encourage one another. We hope these photos inspire you too!
