Receptivity to the Light

BY ADAM MESSENGER (LEARNING ENRICHMENT COORDINATOR)

Light is essential to all of life.

Humans, animals and plants depend on light for their survival.

In God's creativity and wisdom, He has made ways for his creation to receive and respond to light.

Photoreceptors (or 'light sensors') can be found in a variety of forms.

In human and animal eyes, photoreceptor cells are in the retina and respond to light, allowing them to take in their surroundings.

Odd fact! Iguanas have something called a parietal eye on the top of their head. While the 'eye' doesn't see like a conventional eye, the tiny organ has the making of a cornea, lens and retina, and senses light and movement.

In plants, light not only provides a source of energy, but also acts as a signal that controls the growth and behaviour of the plant. Have you ever seen a plant grow at odd angles, just to reach a light source?

God has a lot to say about light in His Word.

In fact, a lot of it has to do with Himself and who He is.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” - John 8:12

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. - 1 John 1:5

The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? - Psalm 27:1

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. - Psalm 119:105

Without stretching the analogy too far here, I believe that in each of us, God has placed 'spiritual photoreceptors' - ways that we can perceive Him, the Light of the world.

Maybe it's been on a walk through a beautiful forest, or while singing at church, while being with loved ones or while reading the Bible.

May our eyes be open to see Him and His glory!
