News from 5/6 Unit

Hello Families,

In Reading, we are continuing to read City Spies. The story is certainly becoming exciting as our characters are in the middle of their mission! Students are analysing, critiquing and synthesising the text using various graphic organisers. In Writing, students are enjoying the different types of poetry. We are reviewing figurative language and we are putting it into our poetry to make it interesting and imaginative.

This week in Numeracy, we are finishing our unit on algebra. We have been so impressed with the level of improvement students have shown in finding variables and solving algebraic equations. For the remainder of this week, we will be revising using the 4 processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) with integers, decimals and fractions. In the last week of school we will be collecting data, creating graphs and analysing the information.

On Tuesday, students went to District Athletics. We all had a fantastic time and it was wonderful to see all the students trying their hardest and achieving their personal best.

Please remember that if your child has a mobile phone, they must hand it in to their teacher before school starts every day. If you could have a conversation about this with your child it would be appreciated.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Kind Regards,

Pippa Davis and Sheena Cronin

What’s Happening in 3/4 unit

Wow... what a productive two weeks we have had in the 3/4 unit!

We spent a bit of time this week preparing for the Student Led Learning Conferences. The students did some role playing to get their head around what the evening would be like, and to build confidence. I can assure you, there were some fantastic 'parents' in these role plays!

We have been continuing our serial story 'Birrung, the Secret Friend,' by Jackie French, which is a narrative

written from the perspective of Barney Bean, the son of a convict that arrived in Australia aboard the First Fleet. This text ties in beautifully with our inquiry unit this term - which is about the impact of European contact with Indigenous Australians in the late 1800s. This is further being supported by the inquiry projects that students have  been working on. Students are going to present these information reports next week - And I know that the students and teachers are VERY excited about this!

In numeracy, we have spent the last two weeks exploring all things 'angles,' with students identifying, describing and creating angles of all different sizes. A highlight of this learning has been using the new protractors to measure and draw angles of our own!

Shhh...! We've been learning about Secret Agent Final Silent E - F.S.E.

In spelling, we have been learning about the numerous jobs that 'Final Silent E' can have... you may have noticed that lots of English words have an 'e' on the end of them that isn't voiced... like 'cake' or 'have'... This is because the Final Silent E is doing one of its jobs:

  1. Making a vowel say its name (sometimes known as a split digraph) e.g. cake - the e is making the 'a' say its name - rather than 'a as in cat.'
  2. Making the letters 'c' or 'g' say their second sound - e.g. Large rather than Larg
  3. Making sure that there isn't an illegal letter at the end of the word (English words cannot end in an i, u, v, q, or j) - E.g. 'blue' or 'have.'
  4. Ensuring that all syllables have a vowel in them - e.g. little - lit tle, or uncle - un cle
  5. Doesn't really do a job, we refer to this guy as an imposter - It is a remnant of the past, or a borrowed word - e.g. 'are'

Have a look around your house and see how many words end in a Final Silent E - then discuss which job that 'Secret Agent FSE' is doing!

Can you believe that we are nearing the end of Term 3? Only one more week of learning to go!

Have a fantastic week!

The Adventures of the 1/2's

Hello Families,

Excitement was certainly in the air on August 25th! We were so thrilled to see so many 1/2 students take part in celebrating Book Week by dressing up as their favourite book

characters. Thank you to all the families for the wonderful effort you put into props and costumes.

In Literacy we have been continuing our studies about poems. The students are almost becoming experts at identifying the style of poem and writing their own. It has been so pleasing to see description language being used and students making great attempts at spelling some very challenging words. Students particularly enjoyed choosing a loved one to write a shape poem for. These were sent home last week so we hope you enjoyed reading them with your child.

Have you ever wondered how many red smarties are in a packet? Well, the 1/2s knowing exactly how to collect, tally and represent that information using graphs! Last week the students were given their own smarties to count, categorise and then interpret data. This week the students are examining measurement, with our focus being on length. Students have been exposed to both formal and informal units and are showing great care when measuring items at different stations around the classroom. Next week we will be revising concepts of number and place value.

We can’t wait to start building our inquiry projects this week. The weather is looking great for some outside work and we can finally put our plans into action. We look forward to sharing some finished produced that aim to help the animal life at Marlborough.

Kind regards,

The 1/2 Team

Indonesian

Last month to commemorate the 77th  Independence Day of Indonesia, our students entered the State Wide Poster Competition held by VILTA (Victorian Indonesian Language Teachers Association) and the Indonesian Consulate. It was judged by Pak I Made Oka Wardhana, Consul Coordinator for Social and Cultural Affairs. The theme was Indonesian native animals.

Well done to all the students who entered the competition – it was great to see the enthusiasm and great work submitted.

I am very pleased to announce that we had six students who were placed in the top three for their respective divisions, which is a great achievement. They received certificates and gift vouchers from VILTA.

Physical Education

In Physical Education classes, students are learning skills, drills and game play for Football. A program ran by Football Victoria and Ms Chisholm are promoted the skills of Football.  Olivia from Football Australia coached the students in learning dribbling, passing and striking techniques.  Sporting schools and the Parents Association purchased new Soccer goals . The students appear to be enjoying the program.

From the Sports field

On Tuesday, the 5/6s and some Grade 4s went to the District Athletics at Bill Stewart Athletics Track in Burwood East. We competed against 7 other schools and came 4th overall. Everyone tried their best and showed great encouragement and sportsmanship.

A BIG shout out to Eden who competed in events with older students so that we could have a full team for each event.

Another BIG shout out to Heidi who fell over when doing hurdles but got straight back up and finished the race with determination.

We are so excited to have the following students attending Division: Lenka, Miles, Jackson, Summer, Ari, Isabelle and Reina. Well done and good luck!

Thank you to all family and friends who attended and supported us with cheering and kind words.

Finally, a huge thankyou to Mrs. Chisholm for organizing students into events and for her help on the day.

Let’s go Marlborough! Let’s go!

Amazing Art

Grade 5/6 students have been waiting so long to get their hands dirty and use clay again in the Art Room! They've practised their modelling techniques (rolling slabs, making coils and spheres, twisting, slipping, scoring etc) with some terracotta clay and will begin creating an artwork in the coming weeks out of air dry clay.

Our Prep-2 students have been working with plasticine, learning about the artist Barbara Reid and her book illustrations made solely from plasticine. Preps modelled their own claymation figure "Morph" out of plasticine and our Year 1/2 students worked on creating a Picasso Face using the modelling material to make their artworks. Year 1/2s also have been painting Picasso faces over the past few weeks.

Year 3/4 students have created a guitar collage inspired by Picasso in his cubist style. They've worked really hard on each step of this collage and they look so vibrant!
