Senior Students Lunch Program

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the new Lunch Time Program in the CLC, initiated by Achok Bieth (Student Wellbeing) and Vina Pinto (CLC). The program commenced to address topics pertinent to the age group in attendance following feedback from Senior students. On this occasion the topic of choice was ‘friendship’ and around ten Year 10, 11 and 12 students attended to participate in the conversations.

What I was drawn to most was not necessarily the responses to the three questions put to the group for discussion (see student responses below) but instead, witnessing each participant living out their responses with their peers in open and respectful ways.

How do you make friends (what fundamental things do you look for)?

  • Consistent Communication and Connection
  • Environment
  • Similar opinions on important issues
  • Being open and approachable
  • Eye contact, smiling, body language, laughter
  • Look for people who are alone

How do you, in difficult situations, effectively communicate with your friends?

  • Being open, honest and respectful
  • Understanding emotions and the reasons for emotions
  • Listening
  • Empathy

How do you build trust within your friendships?

  • Honesty
  • Support
  • Helping each other
  • Spending quality time together
  • Sharing feelings and experiences
  • Not forcing your beliefs on others

It is encouraging to see a group of young people teaming up together and sharing their values, hopes and preferences so comfortably, confidently and readily.
