Year 9-12 Retreat

On Thursday 18th August our Year 9-12 students participated in a retreat day held at the Warrnambool Presbyterian Church. The Speaker for the day was Sam Clear. Sam engaged our students throughout the whole day as he recounted his 19 month, 15,500km walk from the easternmost point of Brazil, through South America, Central America and North America, across Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railway and on foot again from Moscow to the western point of Spain.

Sam’s journey started in 2006 after selling up everything he owned to prepare for his mission to pray for unity amongst the churches/denominations of the world. Sam aimed to stop at every single Church throughout his journey regardless of their denomination and invite them to pray with him to unite all Christians as one, in truth and in love for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

Sam’s journey was extraordinary, with 11 near death encounters, verbal abuse, extreme temperatures to contend with, dangerous animals, hospitalisation, robberies, food and water challenges. It certainly was a life changing experience for Sam as he recounted many highs and lows of his journey. Sam studied and learnt over ten languages to help with conversational barriers. Sam’s recollection of calming an angry pig by rubbing it behind the ear lead to a humorous #dontpunchthepig memory for the day (Can we choose our actions instead of acting on impulse when trouble strikes?)

The students participated in various activities provided by Sam, challenging them as individuals, in pairs, in small and large groups. Themes for these activities were group unity, how we engage with each other, personal goals and passions, carrying God’s love into the world, communication and trust. There was also a very moving conclusion to the day as Sam invited students to come forward, to pour water into a small bowl, step back and pray silently and then transfer the water into a central container symbolizing unity in Christ.

The School Library has purchased two copies of Sam’s book Walk4One which are available for students or parents/carers to borrow. You can also read more about Sam at walk4one.com

South West Volunteer Expo

The South West Volunteer expo was held on Saturday 20th August and King's College had the honour or co-hosting a stand with the Salvation Army.

Emmy, Mim, Lachlan and Max from Year 9 gave up their Saturday to take part in the expo.

Leanne Atkinson from the Salvation Army Thrift Shop was also there to support the students as they met with the general public who visited the expo.

The students had a great opportunity to represent the school community and the Year 9 Connect Program. They spoke about the work they do while volunteering at the Thrift Shop every Thursday afternoon, helping to sort, clean and organise to make it easier for the store to run, and in turn, care for the broader Warrnambool community.

They also got to walk around and look at the 40 other stands that were also on show. We even had Warrnambool Mayor Vicki Jellie come past and ask our students questions about the volunteer work they do at the shop. They all spoke with clarity and confidence answering all questions as they represented King's College and the Salvation Army exceptionally well.

Last week, the Year 7 students had a master class on how to make Fettuccine from scratch. The students nailed it and parents can expect amazing fresh pasta dinners from now on!

Year 9

This week, our Year 9 chefs Bianca, Chloe and Kayla created an amazing Thai Green Curry from scratch. Amazing work and tasted delicious.
