Simple Waste Reduction (and often cost saving!) ideas for the home

City of Port Phillip Council have announced they will be allocating Food and Green organics bins to households in 2023 which will help compost food and garden waste, making reducing the rest of our rubbish easier.

  • consider reducing your bin size from the standard 120 litre to 80 litre for a $70 rebate on your rates (applicable properties).
  • Recycle your household and work batteries – keep an eye out for the various collection locations i.e. op shops and libraries
  • Apply for the Power Saving Bonus offered by the government comparing energy offers and paying $250.  Audit your appliances at the same time!  Check out what can be repaired, donated or replaced with something that could be more environmentally friendly.
  • Consider replacing plastics with recyclable materials where possible, both in the home and office.  Source companies that supply eco-friendly alternatives to items you already use.  Most people have already made the switch from purchasing plastic water bottles and carry a refillable version made of an alternative material, but are you aware that there are options for completely compostable, ethical stationery and packaging supplies, for example?  Check out HeapsGood Packaging for a company that are making a difference!

All this is just a start!  You can set up a street or community borrowing hub or learn about the plants that are native to your area…so many ways to help the environment and stay connected locally.
