Parent Forum #3

At our Parent Forum last week we focused on a parent question in regards to eating times and expectations. A great question, and a good chance for a reminder of times etc.

Eating Times:

  • 10:00 am- Fruit Snack
  • 11:30 am- Eating Break
  • 1:35 pm- Eating Break

Fruit Snack:

Students are encouraged to eat fruit or vegetables during this time. This occurs in the classroom in between lessons. During this time teachers will be introducing a lesson, reading a story etc.

It is great to see most students eating fruit or vegetables during this time.

Eating Breaks:

During both eating breaks students are sitting and eating. The 11:30 am break is in the classroom with teachers again introducing a lesson or reading a story with the 1:35 pm eating break generally taking place outside on the turf, with students sitting with peers. There is an expectation that all students sit during this time, with no sports equipment or games being played.

Over the last two weeks, all students have had the opportunity to add their voices to this conversation. Whilst we all know that one size does not fill all, the majority of students shred that the current format works well for them. Teacher observations support this also.

With consistent, structured and supervised eating breaks throughout the day, we find that this helps students to remain focused. It also provides opportunities for healthy snacks and social time with peers. Students, particularly those in junior school, are taught and encouraged to make sure they have food left for the 1:35 pm eating break.

Students who do not bring a fruit or vegetable snack do find that they are struggling to focus until our 11:30 am break. Other students who do not leave food for the 1:35 pm break find that working until the end of the day can be challenging.

It is common for students (and staff!) to be ready for another snack at 3:30-4:00 pm.

We certainly encourage all students to have something for fruit break and to ensure they leave one piece of food for the 1:35 pm break.
