Learning and Teaching

Art

The countdown to our Twilight Market and Art show has started and the students have been continuing to work hard on their art show pieces this term.  The focus this term for the juniors has been on understanding that it is ok to be different and we have explored this theme through picture books.  Then we have used the illustrations as inspiration for our artworks, learning how to make felt, create collages using different materials and develop their drawing skills.

In the senior classes, they have been working on their construction and design skills creating a variety of 3D artworks.  Learning Space 1 have been exploring a variety of masks across time and each home group has created a different style of mask, Learning Space 2 are creating something fabulous using paper mache (which you will have to come and see) and Learning Space 3 have worked hard to create some fantastic Steampunk sculptures.

Parents, don't forget that if you have made something creative or an artwork and  you would like to have it displayed in the art show, please let me know.  You can email me at lhyde@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au

Also don’t forget to lock in the date - November 3 so you can come along and explore all the amazing artworks your children have been working on just for you.

Juniors

The Junior students at St Francis de Sales began their term by practicing logging on to a device. Not only are they practicing logging on and remembering their login information so that they are able to do this, quickly and effectively when they are in the senior school, but it gives them an opportunity to practice some keyboard skills. If anyone would like to practice their keyboard skills at home, please go to our student portal and click on the ‘keyboard skills’ tab.

This term has also provided the juniors the opportunity to learn about coding. We were able to understand that coding is giving instructions without relying on words. The juniors used symbols and numbers in order to draw a code to get from one location in the classroom to another. In sharing our codes with one another, it soon became clear how important it is to make sure our coded symbols are not only consistent, but are set out in a sequential order and are easy to read.

After our unplugged coding, we were able to use what we had learned to code a Bee Bot!

We all had lots of fun using the Bee Bots and were able to begin setting challenges for ourselves, such as how many coded instructions to set or to try to get our Bee Bot to get to a specific location.

We are all looking forward to when we can use the Bee Bots again!

With the Art Show fast approaching, the juniors spent some time creating a digital art piece that links in with the schools overarching concept for this term: Life and Living.

The juniors learned about how important to our health and wellbeing it is to not only be able to express our emotions, but in order to understand emotions in others.

As a result they have created a digital portrait of themselves, displaying an emotion. They then practiced the skills of editing images and adding shapes and text.

We can’t wait to show off our work with you all at the art show!

Seniors

This term, to tie in with the whole school concept: Life and Living, the seniors have been researching what healthy habits are. In their research the seniors have focused on four key areas: physical health, mental health, social health and technology. After gathering information about these areas they then worked with a partner in order to create an interactive survey using Google Forms and Form Facade. By using Form Facade, we were able to code the survey so that each answer had a point value and it created a running total. Based on the person's final score on their survey it then gave a specific response with helpful information and feedback on an individual’s health. Not only did we learn a lot through the process of coding and creating our survey, but it was a lot of fun filling in each other's surveys.

Once again, art show preparation has been an essential part of our term. The senior students have been using a new program called Pixlr in order to create and edit images to create a GIF that best represents them. Being a new program, it meant that the students needed to use critical thinking and problem solving skills in order to create their designs. These will be shown on an interactive whiteboard during the Art Show and we can’t wait for you to see them!
