Mission

Today we celebrated the Opening Mass. This is an opportunity to come together as a College Community and pray for God’s blessings on our Marist family. It is also an opportunity to welcome the new students to the College and commission our Student Leaders and staff.

After the wild year that was 2020, the theme for Marist schools in 2021 is:

Taken from Paul’s letter to the Romans, it encourages us as Christians to stop and reflect on the physical act of breathing and the spiritual understanding of breath.

  • Did you know that the average person takes 20,000 breaths a day?  As we breathe in, we nourish our physical bodies. Our lungs allow us to breathe in air and provide much-needed oxygen to the rest of the body.

  • Did you know that the average person breathes in about 6 litres of air every minute? As we breathe out, we release carbon dioxide as a waste product which the plants then use.

Breathing is one of the most universal and habitual practices that humans do. This amazing process keeps us going every day yet most of the time, we don’t even think about it.

  • Did you know that in human beings, the right lung is larger than the left lung to accommodate the heart?

The lungs and the heart have a strong physical connection, and both are connected to our inner life, our spiritual life. We are spiritual beings embodied in the physical. We breathe not only in the physical sense but in the spiritual sense. We breathe in the Spirit of life.

Jesus himself reflects on the Spirt of life, the Holy Spirit, in the Gospel of Luke which we heard proclaimed at Mass today:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.”

Throughout the year we will have many opportunities to reflect on how we, as Christian people, can allow the Holy Spirit to come alive in us.

One of these opportunities was offered to Year 12 as they met their Buddies. Time is made available for Year 12 and Year 7 students to gather in small groups and these friendships offering support and encouragement often form lasting memories for our young men.
