Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 4/Week 10-11

Writing
Students will be exploring a range of different writing prompts this week and next to support them with getting their ideas down before they write and expanding on those ideas as they begin to draft. Students really enjoyed researching an area of interest to them and creating their own Kids News article using PicCollage.
Reading
In reading this week students have been reading Kids News articles and answering questions to test their understanding and comprehension of what they have read. They have also watched BTN episodes to continue developing their speaking and listening skills as well as their ability to summarise key points, including identifying themes and messages.
Fluency development has been an important area of development for students this semester and this week they have been given the opportunity to further develop this skill while buddy reading. To finish the year off students have been given autonomy, voice and agency in choosing areas in reading that they want to develop through a Novel Choice Board.
Maths
This week students have been consolidating their understanding of line, shape and angles by working on their Kandinsky artwork. Next week students will continue to conference with teachers on individual points of need, as well as revise concepts taught this year through various open ended problem solving tasks.
Inquiry
This week in UOI students completed a Health Education program on puberty. In the first session they learnt about the physical and emotional changes of puberty, including information about the role of the pituitary gland and hormones in human development. During the second session students learnt about gender specific socio-emotional and physiological changes of puberty as well as possible mood swings and some strategies for managing emotions during puberty. The students handled themselves with maturity and a keen interest in learning about the changes they will be experiencing.
For the remainder of the year students will be completing their assessments for our last unit of inquiry; ‘Who We Are’ focusing on the central idea that balance promotes wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle. They will be showcasing their learning through a number of different activities, including:
- Creating a promotional brochure using their persuasive writing skills to influence others to live a healthy lifestyle
- Writing an informational report on their chosen wellbeing strategy
- Creating a health fitness video
- Designing a healthy and balanced diet
- Creating a poster showing what they have learnt and what their wellbeing goal will be for 2021.
In the final week students will present their best work to the class.
