Welcome to our new team members

We would like to introduce you to two of our new staff for 2021, Learning Mentors Ellie Phillips and Paul Howard. We will continue to feature staff profiles in il giornale throughout the year.

Ellie Phillips

Learning Mentor Ellie Phillips
Learning Mentor Ellie Phillips

I was born and bred in Shepparton and attended St Brendan's Primary School and Notre Dame College and I did my teacher training in Bendigo. I am in my seventh year of teaching, having spent six years at St Mel's, where I continue to work one day a week in the Early Years.

I have a great love for this area of the Goulburn Valley. I enjoy how the community comes together for different events and showcases the diverse cultures the region has. I became a teacher after many years working in hospitality and events. I am glad I made the change in career and enjoy working and learning with little people.

My interests include playing netball at Katandra Football and Netball Club - go Kats, and social tennis. I enjoy spending time with my family and seeing different parts of the world. My partner Brendan and I have a seven-and-a-half-month-old beautiful little boy, Ryder, and a dog named Ginger.

I am enjoying being part of the St Anne's College community. During my first few days at the college, staff, students and families have made me feel very welcome.

Paul Howard

Learning Mentor Paul Howard
Learning Mentor Paul Howard

My name is Paul Howard and it is wonderful to be part of the St Anne's College community. I have come across to St Anne's this year from Notre Dame College in Shepparton where I was a Mathematics teacher and was fortunate enough to perform a number of leadership roles, including Head of Mathematics.

I began my career in 2001 as a primary school teacher; my first posting was in a P-12 school in Melbourne. I spent 13 enjoyable years teaching primary level and I was also fortunate enough to teach in NSW and Alice Springs.

I have a passion for Maths education which led me to jump into secondary education, teaching as a Maths specialist teacher. I have a passion for problem solving and for getting students interested in Maths with engaging and fun activities, with a particular focus on ‘Growth Mindset’. I had the pleasure of recently presenting an online workshop at the Maths Association of Victoria 2020 conference.

I look forward to working with the passionate and committed Learning Mentors in the Year 9 team at St Anne's and participating in the educational journey with the parents and students of the college.

Wellbeing support available at St Anne's College

Wellbeing Officer Mel Formica
Wellbeing Officer Mel Formica

Wellbeing Officer Mel Formica offers a safe and inviting space for students and families to seek and access support. Support provided follows a strength-based, student-centred approach. Wellbeing support with Mel is confidential and voluntary; students can choose whether they wish to attend a meeting and also have the choice to withdraw from any supports offered.

How students can meet with Mel

The Wellbeing office is situated in Study 5 (opposite Project Room 3). Students can access the Wellbeing support in the following ways:

  • Students can self-refer to Student Wellbeing support.
  • Any staff member can arrange for a referral to Student Wellbeing if they have concerns about a student’s wellbeing.
  • Parents can also request a time for their child by contacting Mel via phone at the college on (03) 4812 2993 or email at mformica@sackialla.catholic.edu.au
  • At times, a student may be referred to an external support service. We also respect the fact that some students and parents may prefer to seek professional support independent from the school setting. In such cases, St Anne’s College values working collaboratively with external support services. We encourage parents/carers to communicate with the college if there is a significant issue affecting their child’s wellbeing.

A range of wellbeing support available

Mel has a range of experiences supporting young people and their families. Mel is passionate about helping students navigate their way through the various social and emotional challenges they may face. These challenges may include:

  • Emotional challenges
  • Social difficulties
  • Family challenges
  • School refusal
  • Grief and loss
  • Risk-taking behaviours
  • Mental health
  • Child safety concerns

St Anne's College's school-wide wellbeing programs

As a whole school, St Anne’s College facilitates and supports a range of proactive, preventative and early intervention programs. Some examples of some of the programs scheduled during the year include:

  • Presentations and onsite visits from community agencies
  • Project ROCKIT – term one School of Innovation
  • Visit from Victoria Police Youth Liaison Officer
  • Health and Wellbeing Days – promoting health and wellbeing and having fun participating in lessons
  • National Day Against Bullying – All students participate in activities on this day
  • R U OK? Day – Raises awareness of engaging in regular and meaningful conversations with others
