Foundation News

The children felt very proud to share their learning with you this week, at the Student Led Three-way Conferences. The children had been working very hard to achieve their writing goals and counting skills over the past three weeks.

Today we celebrated book week which involved dressing as a book character, a Book Character Parade, stories and reading in the library.

This fortnight in English, we continue learning to spell through the diagraphs ea and ch. We are writing short narratives with sizzling starters. There are only two weeks before the Premier’s reading challenge finishes on 6th September. Please help your child to achieve the challenge by reading Challenge Books to your child each morning/evening (see the list on the PRC website). In Mathematics, the students are learning about money and time over the next two weeks. In science we are inquiring about forces bouncing and rolling materials and forces. In Respectful Relationships we are learning about feelings, empathy and kindness. We look forward to seeing you at Ormond PS’s open afternoon on Friday, 6th September, 2:45 to 3:15pm. Here we will demonstrate some of the activities that help us to be aware of others and their feelings.

All the best for a lovely fortnight

Year 4 News

Year 4 students have been focusing on their writing goals during free write sessions. The following is a short story by Yiran L

Flying High

Creative Writing By Yiran L

There is a woman called Angela, who has been saving birds for 30 years. She lets the birds free from the confines of their cages, and she always says, “Fly, I let you guys fly high.”

Angela watches the birds carefully. Perhaps it is because she wishes hard to be as free as they look when she opens the hatch on their tiny prison door. Angela isn’t sure why, but she knows in her heart that one day she too will fly free.

One day, the birds will fly around her and they will take her up, up to the sky.

Year 5 & 6 News

Year 5 and 6 are currently completing their bike education program on Friday mornings. They have been developing their skills and knowledge to ride safely and independently. As part of the program students have participated in theory sessions to gain knowledge and understanding of the road traffic environment and road rules. Currently they are completing practical sessions  where they develop the physical and cognitive skills to manage the road traffic environment safely as a cyclist. Overall the purpose of the program is to develop knowledge of road rules, responsible behaviours, attitudes and decision-making skills for the safe use of bicycles both on and off the road through participation in enjoyable learning experiences relevant to their ages and abilities. At the end of the program students will be tested on their safe bike skills and if successful will gain road and path certification.

Some of the practical activities students are participating in include; scanning for awareness of obstacles, emergency breaking, general bike handling skills, knowledge of bike parts and functions and understanding of street entries from driveways and paths.

We have had a tremendous amount of parent support and help during the program and thank everyone who has volunteered.
