Inquiry

We are global citizens!

We may only be in Year 1 and 2 but we are global citizens- or at least, we are learning to be. Term 3 has seen us learning about geography and our local environment. An important part of our geography unit was learning that some things in our environment are natural and some are man-made. Elaine shared stories with us about how special and sacred the land is to our Indigenous Australians by sharing some picture story books and personal stories about her family history with us. We took a closer look at a part of our environment that is special to us and our school community - Lakewood Reserve.

We enjoyed a beautiful walk in the sunshine around the lake and looked for signs along the way that told us how to care for the lake. Our eagle eyes helped us spy signs in the distance and we couldn't wait to get closer and read what they had to say. We even got to say hello to some of the resident ducks along the way! When we returned to school, we talked about the different signs we had seen and why their messages were important. We each made a poster of our own to tell people what they can do to protect the lake and reserve around it.

After our term full of learning, the students have chosen their own inquiry focus to create a project showcasing their new knowledge. It is always wonderful for us teachers to see the students exploring their own interests and using their creativity at the end of each term to plan and create projects, such as lego environments, artworks of our surroundings and posters to show our Knox Park community how we can care for our school.
