Secondary School News

Paddling along the Blackwood River as part of the Year 9 Encounter, April 2019.

From the Deputy Principal Pastoral Care Nick Jones

This week at our Secondary assembly I spoke to the students about the character strength of Bravery. I thanked the students who displayed bravery and courage throughout Term 1. Some examples of our courageous students include:

  • Students who have contributed as school leaders throughout the term
  • Students who raised money and shaved their heads as part of the ‘World's Greatest Shave’ campaign
  • Caroline Richards for singing solo in front of the Secondary School during the Week 5 assembly
  • The Cambodian Pilgrims who are giving up their school holidays to travel to Cambodia to teach English to under privileged street children of Phnom Penh
  • All students who have stood up for others in a difficult situation and not been a bystander

I encouraged all students to think about the challenges that Term 2 will bring and asked them to seek opportunities that may place them out of their comfort zone. John Wollaston provides many situations for students to experience new challenges and it is important that students embrace these times and events when they are presented.

Well done to the Year 9 students who completed their three-day Rafting Encounter on the Blackwood River last week. All students certainly displayed bravery and courage by working together to paddle 16 kilometres up the river. The Year 9s continued their Into Adulthood program with the AdventureWorks team and enjoyed the challenges that were put in front of them during their time together.

As Term 1 concludes I would like to wish everyone a safe and holy Easter break. I encourage families to schedule some quality time together. Switch off screens and other electronic devices and enjoy the great weather that our Autumn season brings us. Students are reminded that they must arrive at school for the start of Term 2 in their full winter uniform, ensuring that their presentation, including hairstyles, meets the expectations as outlined in the School Diary.

All the best.
