School Wide Positive Behaviour Support ‘The Bimbadeen Way’

The Bimbadeen Way!

We are so glad that the children have been embracing ‘The Bimbadeen Way’ with such enthusiasm. Teachers love giving out values tokens to children who are ‘caught being good’ and who demonstrate our four school values. We are so proud of the amount of children who have been standing out the front of assembly each week to receive their certificate for receiving values awards.

This term as part of our work on our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support framework, teachers have been focusing on the skill of raising their hand to speak and share their ideas appropriately.  The children have responded positively to this and teachers and students feel this is going well.

Our new focus is now to explicitly teach children interventions for ‘Distracting Others’.

Classes have discussed what types of behaviours can distract others and therefore disrupt teaching time. For example, whispering to a friend during a lesson, making noises on the floor, playing with a toy, getting up to put fruit in the bin during instruction time or yelling at another classmate.

Across the school, teachers will be exploring behaviours and skills to assist children to:

-Listen attentively

-Ignore peer distractions on the floor or at their desk

- Stay focused during lesson times

Some of the interventions teachers may have trialed in their classroom to assist in teaching this skill to their students include: circle time discussions, role play, scheduled active breaks, use of a supportive peer or sensory aids to assist them.

Many classes have also watched some support videos which have created great discussions.

These have included ‘The Art of Ignoring’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep0bij_ZDoU and

‘Develop a Script for Ignoring’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI-RXUB7huU.

These videos are great for providing strategies for children to follow such as:

  1.  Count to 5
  2.  Say to yourself “I won’t look, I’ll keep on working”
  3.  Continue to work
  4.  Say to yourself “Good for me, I did it!”

We have included the links if you would like to watch them together at home and discuss these strategies at home with your child.

We look forward to our next presentation of values certificated at upcoming assemblies.
