Rotary BBQ & Dodge Ball a great success!

Last week The Rotary Club of West Tamar helped raise the biggest amount in one fundraising event out of all the fundraisers we've ever done over the last 4 years!!!!!  A massive $1,303.35 was raised from the Rotary's sausage sizzle which will go towards our Science & Engineering Challenge Team costs.

At the same time we had a super charged Dodge ball match in the gym (click on the LCS Live AV below) which was very energetic but the sausages kept our students going!   The Dodgeball match was between our previous Science Challenge teams (comprising Hobart 2016, Dubbo 2017, Darwin 2018) and our current Bunbury WA team (with some help from 3 members of our 2008 Gold Coast team, Mr and Mrs Spaulding and Mr Ballard). The current team also got help from Mr Bain and Mr Ryan Bosker. Despite all the extra help from some pretty fit adults, the competition was fierce and our year 11/12’s were not going to go down that easily. In the end, the Hobart/Dubbo/Darwin team beat the Bunbury/Gold Coast team, 3 games to 1. It was loads of fun!  Thank you so much to the Rotary Club of West Tamar for supporting our school and also for the awesome opportunities they provide for our youth in the community.

#NotEvenOnce - Teen Challenge Tasmania talks

LCS were privileged to have Teen Challenge visit our school on Monday, sharing with our Year 7 - 12 students during the day and then presenting a community seminar in the evening to parents.  Passionate speakers Tanya Cavanagh and John Aldridge informed and challenged our students, giving valuable information about the current alcohol and drug culture.   There were quite a few questions from students during the seminars and the feedback has been very positive.   More information was shared to parents in the evening session including signs of addiction and helpful strategies parents could use to keep their children safe.  We encourage parents to check out the Teen Challenge Website for more information and look forward to inviting Teen Challenge back for further talks with students in the future.

UTAS Science Investigation Awards

Year 9 Advanced Science

On Thursday the 5th of September, the Year 9 Advanced Science students all attended the UTAS Science Investigation Awards. They had to present to judges and talk about the research they had undertaken in Year 9 Advanced Physical Sciences with Mrs Boyle as their teacher in Semester 1. The topics they researched were varied with sport science, aviation science, value adding grey water and value adding excess Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere as entries. One entry received a special commendation on the day, which was Finlay Burton and Lorraine Dinsmore with their research on which soap or sanitiser kills bacteria the most effectively. A huge thank you to Mr Hendra and Mr Sansom for escorting students to UTAS on the day and also our 9 Advanced Science students, who represented the school in a Christlike and humble manner. Well done everyone!

Future Science Challenge Team Fundraising

Science Challenge Team thanks Anderson Morgan & Melbern Auto

A HUGE thank you to Anderson Morgan and Melbern Automotive for their support of our Science Challenge Team.  It's been a busy week of thank you's and one of our Science Team members couldn't resist the chance to sit in Bernard Watson's VW - great fun.   The thanks continued as two of our Science Team shared their enthusiasm for STEM with Anderson Morgan Chief Executive Officer, Raoul Anderson and Service Delivery Manager, Alistair Chilcott.  The mechanics of 'Building the bridge' was discussed and it was interesting to hear all the considerations that go into this challenge which tends to be a cliff hanger in the competition.

Life Skills need your LIDS

Our Life Skills class needs your help and your plastic lids!

As part of their Connecting to the Community Curriculum, Life Skills needs milk bottle tops, soft drink tops and flat water-based tops so they can be recycled and used to make

prosthetic hands for children in need.  This project is run by

Envision Hands, which is a not-for-profit community initiative that uses 3D printing to turn plastic waste into mechanical hands and arms for kids, with the products being sent around the world.  They report that over one million bottle tops have been collected so far, so let's add to that through your donations which can be dropped off at our school office.  For more information, check out the article below.

Men of Faith Prayer Meeting

Sunday September 22nd in the school staff room

2.45pm - 3.45pm

All LCS fathers and especially those with children in Year 7 - 12 are invited join our Men of Faith Prayer Meeting on Sunday 22nd September.  The focus of this meeting will be to pray for our Middle and Senior School.  Praying as fathers is a manly privilege that fathers have been given by the Lord. The deep identity needs amongst this generation and the increasing confusion in our culture, are urgent prompts for us to seek the Lord’s intervention, for His Glory and for our/their good. LCS has such an opportunity to be fertile soil for kids to find their place, their joy, their identity in the Lord and be inspired to live wholehearted, faithful and joyful lives for Him. We need to be praying for these things with the spiritual authority given to us .  We hope more LCS fathers are able to attend this meeting and join together in prayer over our school.
