Digital Technologies

What a busy time it’s been for Digital Technologies lately. Recently, Year 7s had the opportunity to hear Mrs D’Aquino speak about the hardware involved with their laptops. Year 8s have had a go at designing objects for 3D printing such as characters, jewelry and original objects that solve an everyday problem.

This term sees Year 7s starting their programming journey by making animations in Scratch. Year 8s are making movies using Adobe Premiere in the silent movie style. Year 10s are learning a text based programming language called Python, which can be used to make animations, games and even connect in with a BBC Microbit. Year 11s are hard at work learning the theory behind web design before they create their own website.

Hardware Software

In DTE, my class and I recently had the experience of watching Mrs D’Aquino, pull a laptop apart. We learnt about various different elements of a laptop that Kilbreda uses today and saw a laptop Kilbreda used in the recent past and a laptop Kilbreda used in the more distant past. Most of the parts were larger and heavier. Today our laptops are much lighter than they used to be. We got to handle all the parts including the keys, speakers and screen. We also learnt how important it is to treat our laptop with respect and what parts of the laptop break the easiest.

3D Printing

In Term 1 the Year 8 students studied 3D printing as a topic in DTE. We learnt about the interesting history behind 3D printing and where this amazing innovation is heading. Our task was to invent an object which could fix a problem that needed to be solved. After we brainstormed ideas, we made a draft of our invention, annotating key features. We used an online website called TinkerCad to complete our designs using the various tools and shapes on the website. My favourite part was bringing my design to life on TinkerCad and experimenting with different tools. After the whole class completed our designs, we all voted to determine whose work would be printed. I was surprised about how much I learnt during this topic and it was very interesting to hear about how 3D printing technology is evolving and changing today's world.
