Our Year 8 Science students were given the task to write a short story or draw a labelled picture showing the path the cheese sandwich may travel.  This is one of the stories:

Year 8 Digestive System story 🙂

Jim sees a sandwich, he then consumes the cheesy looking sandwich. He thinks to himself, this must taste really good. He consumes it in a few bites. He was right, the cheese sandwich was indeed delicious. Meanwhile, the cheese sandwich begins the digestive process. The cheese sandwich begins in his mouth, he chews the sandwich with joy and pleasure as his saliva moistens the sandwich while it is being grinded by his teeth. The sandwich then goes down the oesophagus, plunging into the stomach. After the sandwich is then broken down further into chyme within the stomach, it travels down into the small intestine, the nutrients from the cheese sandwich getting absorbed into the walls of the bloodstream. Then, the rest of the cheese sandwich becomes waste and is sent to the large intestine. Suddenly, Jim really has to go to the toilet to take number 2. Meanwhile, the former cheese sandwich is nearing the end of the digestive process, being sent to a pipe connected to the large intestine called the rectum, a place where nerves alert the rest of the body when the best time to expel the waste into the toilet is, through what we call the anus. Having reached the end of its 30-40 hour trip, the journey of the cheese sandwich is finally finished.
