An athletics carnival...with a twist!

House spirit was at an all-time high!
House spirit was at an all-time high!

The atmosphere at the Domain Athletics Centre was buzzing with energy, enthusiasm and excitement on Friday 6 August as Year 7-12 students took to the track and field to showcase their talents at the Senior Athletics Carnival.

It was terrific to see so many students having fun, cheering each other on and challenging themselves with their peers, with participation and house spirit at an all-time high.

For the first time in the event's history, the athletics carnival included a program of 'novelty' events, featuring the much-loved three-legged race, 'chuck the chook', tug of war and, of course, the classic egg and spoon race.

Senior School Sports Coordinator, Mia Blignaut said the novelty events were introduced with the aim to increase participation and encourage students of all skill levels and abilities to 'have a go'.

'Ultimately, our motto was "less sitting around and more fun with your friends",' Ms Blignaut said.

'And, by all accounts, it was a roaring success, with the "Fun Zone" buzzing with excitement throughout the day and everyone absolutely loving the tug of war so much so that they had multiple attempts against their friends,' she said.

'Shout out to the Year 12s who won the inaugural Staff v Students Tug Of War—quite convincingly as well!'

Team selections are currently being finalised and trainings will commence next week with all eyes firmly on the Southern SATIS Athletics Carnival, which will be held on Tuesday 7 September at the Domain Athletics Centre.

Full results from our the Senior Athletics Carnival, including Queen of the Track, Age Group winners and the much-anticipated House Participation Trophy, will be announced at our next Senior School Assembly on Thursday 9 September.

Well done to all competitors and special thanks to our HPE staff for making the day such a success!
