What we’ve been up to at OSHC!

It’s been a little quieter than usual here at OSHClub due the recent lockdown, however, we’ve had an amazing time creating fabulous activities for children and families to do at home! In addition, we were lucky enough to complete our OSHClub Mini Olympics right before lockdown and had so much fun exploring our competitive side!

The OSHClub Mini Olympics!

The children had an amazing time engaging with our OSHClub Mini Olympics in week four, celebrating and exploring a range of cultures and experiences. It was fantastic to see so many children enthusiastically participating in our daily events, whilst developing their sense of identity and confidence!

Day 1: Minute to win it!

Participating in the suck it up, stack it up and keep it up challenges, children developed their fine motor skills. A little bit silly and 100% fun, the adjudicators (AKA Laura and Samara) would like to extend their congratulations to our winners Ollie, Vivienne, and Gwen!

Day 2: Athletics!

Completing running races, bean bag toss and the ultimate playground race, children developed their physical wellbeing! Fantastic efforts to everyone involved, including our winners Saxon, Lucia, and Charlie F!

Day 3: Down ball Championship!

Competing in the ultimate round of down ball, children developed their gross motor skills. We are so proud of our little athletes and congratulations to Charlie E, Zoe, and Lidia!

Day 4: AFL Longest Kick!

Mixing things up a little, we included a touch of AFL into our mini-Olympics! Building upon children’s sense of persistence and resilience, we were amazed at the efforts of everyone involved including our winners Ollie, Vivienne, and Charlie E!

OSHC at Home

Staying connected with families within the community, the team at St James OSHClub decided to start our own OSHC at home! We absolutely love our afternoon clubs here at St James OSHClub, so each afternoon we have been sending out will some activity ideas from our art, sports, cooking, sustainability and coding clubs.

This week we made maracas, got fit and active as we jumped around our living rooms, explored our community on a nature walk, built code for a robot, and got messy in the Kitchen with Laura and Lidia!

Family Tree

Recently at OSHC, we’ve been working on the creation of our OSHClub family tree. Charlie in Grade 1 has helped to paint the sign for this area and has been the first family to join our tree. We hope to use this space as an area to celebrate the different cultures and families that make up the OSHC community at St James.

If you currently attend OSHC, we would greatly appreciate if you could send through a family photo so that we can build our tree!

Spotlight on the Community

This week we are sharing some information about a current issue facing all individuals globally: Climate Change. Science works offered a free webinar for children, parents, and families on Sunday the 15th of August from 4.00pm unpacking the science behind why our climate is changing. Participants engaged with information from the latest reports as they learn about how climate change is specifically affecting us here in Victoria. The second part of the program invited families to work together to create a pledge of actions to help us all have a thriving future. As part of National Science Week, Sciencework’s webinar Climate Change: Families for a thriving future provided an exciting opportunity for families to deepen their understanding of climate science and our changing world, as they discussed climate action and worked together as a family to create a climate pledge. This is closely related to the National Science Week Goal Food: Different by Design which seeks innovation and sustainability in food production.
