SRC Meeting

It was wonderful to see our SRC's for the first-ever online meeting with so many wonderful ideas.  So many in fact that we feel we can not wait another two weeks to meet again.

Keep an eye out for the assembly where the SRC messages will be shared this week.

Next SRC meeting: Online (same link) 8:30 am on the 25th of August.

Prep

Wow! What an amazing start the Preppies have made to this round of remote learning.

We have been so proud of how they have tackled each task with positivity and resilience. Being greeted each morning on our live meets with smiling faces and eager "good mornings" have made our day!

The Preps should be commended on the level of effort and perseverance they are putting into every learning opportunity. They all come to our small group reading meets ready and eager to participate, share their ideas and have a laugh with their friends.

A big thank you to all the prep students and their amazing parents for their support during this difficult time!

We are so proud of you all and the work you are producing!

Well done Prep.

From Miss Capomolla and Miss Tierney

The Preps have been doing lots of different, interactive and fun learning activities over the last three weeks such as:

 Year 1

This week in Year 1, we have begun celebrating Book Week and we have had so much fun reading each of the nominated books and completing lots of different activities.

We looked at the book “There’s No Such Thing!” and made scary things become happy again, like snakes with party hats and enjoying a rainbow at the end of a big storm.

We also created our own imaginary creatures and magical lands, based on the story “Ellie’s Dragon”.

The highlight of our week has been dressing up in our Book Week costumes and having a virtual parade. We loved seeing what everyone was dressed as and sharing our favourite books.

We can’t wait to continue the fun next week in Book Week!

Year 2

This week Year 2 created a 'book nook' for Book Week.  You may well ask what a 'book nook' is...it is a special place to read lots and lots and lots of books.  We all love to relax with a good book and a cup of tea / milk especially during this very special time of Book Week.

Quote of the Week from Iris S

"When I am reading, I sink into it and think of nothing else"

Miss Whiffen

Year 3/4C

On Wednesday 18th August, 3/4C joined our class google meet to watch our first online Book Week performance.  The performance was incredible.  The whole of St James school was on the Bigger, Better, Brighter show. Whilst watching the show, we got to type in the comments and answer the questions on our own or with our class on google meet.

We did every dance that the performers showed us and it was amazing.

Learning Remotely In Year 3/4CJ

In 3/4CJ we are all missing being with each other in class but we are enjoying learning new ways to communicate our ideas and thinking.  This last week we used a jamboard to record all the amazing language we heard in the class novel Mrs Joplin was reading aloud to us.  It was just like when we put our ideas on post-it notes except this time they didn’t fall off the board onto the floor!

In Maths we were learning about capacity and Mrs Conway told us to race around our house and find items that have different capacities in millilitres or litres.  We all shared what we found, compared items that had the same capacity but looked different and then recorded our findings. For example the balsamic vinegar and maple syrup bottles actually both had the same capacity!

Year 5

In the Senior school we have been writing about 'Chasing Happiness' as part of Shared Stories.  Below are some poems and pieces of writing the Year 5s have written.

Week 6 wrap up

What a massive week we have had of triumphs and challenges.  In year 6 the connection between peers and teachers had been clearly missed and we discussed how we could create deeper connections with our peers over the course of lockdown as we felt very disconnected after the last.

Together we came up with a wonderful idea to do breakout rooms like we have seen our mum and dads do in work or university meetings. This has allowed us to work in small groups, discuss our work and even go off topic a little and have a laugh together. This has also given us time to work in small groups with Miss Black and ask all the burning questions we need answering and allowed us to receive feedback in verbal form.

Our meets had been so successful over the first few days (be it a few technical difficulties) we decided to put in more breakout rooms for multiple topics, even assembly!

So please keep your eyes peeled for the link on Friday as we have been working hard on putting the script together to keep you informed about the continued good news of St James.

Transdev School Bus Safety Poster Competition

Do you know a wee Warhol, a compact Cezanne or a petite Picasso? Transdev are calling all Victorian primary school students to create a poster about bus safety for their chance to win some fantastic prizes!

This poster competition is a great opportunity for Prep to Year 6 students to engage with and learn about safe travel on and around buses, and to employ analytical and creative skills to develop a poster promoting bus safety.

Teaching students about travelling safely on the bus network helps build confidence when travelling and prepare them to travel independently to and from school.  Safety is a priority and they are committed to educating students about safe behaviours on buses and spreading the message that bus safety is everybody’s responsibility.

The bus safety poster competition opens on Monday 26 July and closes midnight Sunday 19 September.  Prizes include games, book vouchers and arts packs. Prizes will be awarded in three categories : Prep – Year 2, Years 3 - 4 and Years 5 - 6.  A special prize called the “Journey Makers’ Choice Award” chosen by popular vote of Transdev Melbourne staff will also be awarded in each category and a prize awarded to the school with the most student entries. Winners will be announced in early October.

For more information and to submit their entry, students can visit https://transdevmelbourne.com.au/poster-competition/.
