Year 11 Outdoor Education Snow Camp

Tuesday 3 August to Friday 6 August

After the stress of the whole class having to get COVID tests to attend camp, we were so so lucky to be able to squeeze in our snow camp between lockdowns. As the teacher of this group of young adults, I can only say how proud and privileged I am to have been able to take such an amazing group up to the snow. Being a new teacher to the College, this group of students has got to be one of the best groups I have ever taken out. They were so respectful and supportive of each other - they were resilient, hardworking, selfless, and appreciative.

They are really a testament to Mordialloc College and everything the College stands for.

Some comments on the camp from the VCE Outdoor Education students:

We went to Mt Baw Baw and hiked up to a camping spot where we set up camp and made dinner using trangias. There are 100 other preferred methods rather than hiking up through the snow with our heavy packs, carrying everything we needed for a night in the snow but we carried on. We then camped overnight in the rain and snow. It was cold, camp was wet and it really reaffirmed that I do not like being cold.

Let's say again that we were C-O-L-D. Sleeping was so relaxing and bed at 8.00 pm was so warm and inviting!

We woke up in the morning - the snow gums were beautiful and we hiked back down after packing up our camp with frozen fingers and then we went skiing. It was very cold but we all persevered through the cold hands and feet and had the most fun skiing which made it all worth it. I have never had so much frustration in my life than having to fix my snow shoes!

I stacked it a few times (many times) skiing. It was painful but unforgettable. Skiing was way more fun than I anticipated, but camping in the snow was not as glam as I had predicted. It was so much fun skiing down the mountain - something I want to do again!

It was a nice bonding experience.

It was a good trip overall, just a tad cold. Best part was probably throwing snowballs at people.

Although it was extremely cold and I thought my feet would have to be amputated, it was an amazing experience with many fun activities, challenges, and snow of course!

It was an overall great life experience that I probably won't be able to do again.

It was an incredibly challenging experience that not many people get to take part in, so for that reason I’m grateful that I’ll be able to say I’ve camped in the middle of the snow overnight.
