Year 8 Market Day

Harry Wood

As the Year 8 market stalls have come to an end, the groups reflect on their time spent together brainstorming and putting into action their plan to sell as much as possible on Market Day. In class, we were tasked with forming a group, getting a name and a poster, as well as working out how much we were going to sell it, each class was assigned a different product, these include soft drinks, lolly bags, spiders, as well as doughnuts and cookies freshly made from the hospitality boys. During this time we worked a lot on numbers and with money, working on the COGS, potential revenue, expenses and many other prices we had to work through before getting to the actual day. Market Day was held on Wednesday 25 August, and again on Tuesday 31 August with multiple groups going each day. We all had fun selling our product and doing it with our mates at the same time. It was a fun experience and we thank everyone for helping the stalls go ahead through this covid affected time.

The Year 8 Market Day 2021 in Marist College Ashgrove was a huge success this year. The stalls of the Market Day were COVID safe and clean, and the people manning them would work with efficiency with their new payment methods. The stalls were doing so successfully that as soon as they had opened, they were flooded with dozens of people scrambling to get to the front of the line to get their sweet, delicious treats. The lolly stalls, in particular, were so popular, that they had all sold out in 5 minutes of opening. This shows how successful the Market Day stalls in 2021 really were.

Most of Year 8 joined in on Tuesday 31 August to make a few peoples day a little bit better at Marist College Ashgrove. We sold fresh ice-cold drinks and delicious sweet and sour lolly bags. Who wouldn't want that at their school? Our aim was to sell as much of our product as possible. However, sadly because of COVID-19 we were unable to choose what we wanted to sell. Most groups came up with awesome ideas on what they were going to sell until everything changed. Not being able to choose our own product was a bit disappointing because we couldn't show our great ideas to the teachers and the school. But it wasn't all bad as most of the groups sold out within five minutes. But looking at the plus side it was super fun and a good learning experience for the boys in Year 8 Business. I'd like to say a big thanks to Jack Ackery, Angus Cope, Killian Menzies and Ned Gould for helping me out with our stall and preparation.

Year 8 Market Day occurred on Wednesday 25 August in Break 1, we were alongside 21 other groups.  All the proceeds were going to the Marist Christmas Appeal at the end of the school year. The items that were on sale consisted of doughnuts, cookies, soft drinks, lollies, chips, and spiders. We were all waiting for the sound of the bell and see all of the students sprinting towards us and that's when we knew this was going to be a hectic couple of minutes. Everyone was working as a team at a rapid pace trying to keep up with the number of orders that kept coming in and kept trying to make sure that every student got exactly what they wanted. All the stores sold out in a matter of minutes, not to anyone's surprise. Overall this day was very successful and the Year 8 cohort are very thankful that we were given the opportunity to do this kind of thing, whilst contributing to a very important charity.

Year 8 Business students participated in Market Day on Wednesday 25 August and were very successful in selling spiders, cookies, soft drinks, lollies, and doughnuts. The students’ knowledge of demand and marketing allowed them to formulate a plan on how to make the most profit possible with advertising techniques and effective pricing. They created posters that were put up around the school to promote their stalls, and each member calculated their expenses and losses according to their price. Each class consisted of 4-5 groups and all members contributed to running their stall in some way, whether it be advertising or producing the product. The day was a great experience for our students and will hopefully be just as extraordinary in the coming years.
