What's  Happening

YEARS 4 AND 5 -

TAE KWON DO PROGRAM

Is it a ninja? ... A samurai warrior?

Is it... the Karate Kid?!

CLOSE!!!

But no... it's the Year 4s and 5s doing their virtual Taekwondo classes, thanks to the flexibility and assistance of the instructors at Melbourne Taekwondo Centre!

Upon return to school at the conclusion of Lockdown 5.0, we requested parent feedback across the school regarding student wellbeing. Within the cohorts of Year 4s and 5s, the overwhelming feedback was that parents wanted their children to get 'out' (be active, get away from screens), exercise, have fun and to do bonding activities to regain those crucial social connections with their peers and teachers.

Luckily, at this point in time, we were very fortunate to receive a Term 3 Sporting Schools Grant which gave us access to a four week Taekwondo 'Self Defence' Program for the year 4/5 students.

We completed our initial two lessons, much to the excitement of the very, very enthusiastic kids!

Taekwondo has so many documented benefits, such as...

- Boosted confidence and self-esteem

- Improved flexibility, agility and reflexes

- Awareness of mindfulness

- Development of leadership skills

- Increased body strength and stamina

- Development of concentration and focus

.... but in truth, as amazing as all of these advantages are, we were all just thrilled to see the kids enjoying themselves!

Then Lockdown 6.0 came along ... and we were a bit disappointed to miss out on the remainder of our lessons, however, again, thanks to the amazing skills, flexibility and generosity of Harry and Bernie at Melbourne Taekwondo Centre, they were able to make it work via Zoom! The Year 4s and 5s engaged in their third lesson today, and will have their final Taekwondo lesson next Thursday.

Engaging in Taekwondo has been a fabulous outlet for students to channel their stress and frustration at this complex and challenging time.

It has also allowed students from other Year 4 and 5 classes to connect and bond.

On behalf of Year 4 and 5 teachers and children... thank you again to Bernie and Harry - and Melbourne Taekwondo Centre!

YEAR 5: Home Learning Scavenger Hunt

The Year 5s have been doing something special recently and we wanted to tell you all about it…

On Monday 6 September the Year 5s started a competition between all of the classes in Year 5. It’s a Scavenger Hunt!

There are lots of different challenges that you earn points for, the amount of points range from 100-500 points depending on the activity.

We, of course, have to give proof that we have completed the challenges, so we have a Padlet to submit proof, like a photo, video or written proof. We also put our points in a spreadsheet for each class to put in their points and tally them.

Here are some of the amazing challenges we've completed...

Evie (5C) shared a photo of a collection of hers, which earnt her 300 points!

Skye-Bella (5P) helped with extra chores around the house, including unpacking the dishwasher, which earnt her 500 points.

Sophie (5A) shared a photo of her 'Crazy Hair Day' for 200 points!

Lily (5C) stopped to "smell the roses" on her walk (and take this beautiful photo too!), which earnt her 400 points.

Darcy (5A) shared a photo of a delicious food platter she made to share with her family members, which earnt her 300 points.

The Scavenger Hunt lasts until the last Friday of term, and hopefully we will do another one next term! The activities are lots of fun and some are very wacky!

We are all very excited to continue this Scavenger Hunt and see who the winning class is! GO 5C!
