Year 3 News

Dearest parents and guardians,

We are fast approaching the end of term three and that means the end of the year is almost in sight – hang tight everyone!

As we all look forward to a break, the grade three team would like to express our deep gratitude to all of you - parents, carers, children – for the gigantic effort made to keep our students educated. This has not been an easy task and we acknowledge and are grateful for all the work that has been done at home. We also hope that you have found time to rest and connect with each other too.

And now, let’s celebrate! We teachers are so proud of the work that grade three students have been producing during remote learning this term. Here are some exceptional examples for you all to enjoy.

Let’s celebrate Tia, from 3D and her diamante poem entitled, “Seasons”. The number of words (nouns, adjectives and verbs) on each line creates the structure of this poem. When the words are written in the way Tia has done, the resulting shape is a diamond. This gives the poem type its name. Beautiful work Tia.

Let’s celebrate now with two party invitations created as part of a writing learning task, in our new unit on functional writing. Ruby Cokovski, in 3A has created a disco party invitation and Paige Annison, also from 3A, has created an end of lockdown party invitation. Both students have made excellent use of digital media, as well as being creative with fonts, layout and graphics. Perhaps they will have a career in graphic design! Great work girls.

And now from the grade three team, we wish you all the very best in the weeks to come.

From Denay, Ky, Jaime, Janina and Robyn

Year 4 News

As term three draws to a close the grade four teachers would like to thank all students and families for making the term a success. The Brookside value of resilience has shone through during this testing time and everyone is to be applauded. As the holidays approach, it’s great to reflect on what a great term it has been!

Reading:

Poetry was the focus for the last four weeks of term. Students were introduced to four amazing poets: Banjo Paterson, Steven Herrick, Solli Raphael and Shel Silverstein. The focus was about enjoying poems, performing and identifying varying poetic devices. Michael Rosen taught tips about how to read poetry aloud and it was fabulous seeing the performances shared during our daily Zooms and weekly uploads. We have some budding performers among us!

On Thursday 17th September the poet Steven Herrick will showcase his work by putting on a performance for all grade four students via Zoom. This will be a wonderful way to celebrate all of the hard work put in by everyone during the term!

Project Based Learning:

Creativity flourished when the grade four students designed and built a robotic hand to help a person with a disability. The students are now designing and building a device of choice that could help a person with a disability. We are excited to see what the students create!

Year 5 News

Throughout our Reading unit we explored Morris Gleitzman as an author, and students demonstrated the ability to make connections with an understanding that whilst we may face some difficult situations there is always humour and hope pushing us forward, as they said- “What silly people to take all the toilet paper, like that’s helping anything. Just stay home, so we end this lockdown”.

In writing students explored poetry as a form of expression and we were blown away by their talents.

This is 2020

Why do people worry?

Why do people stress?

Why can people get their freedom and justice?

Yeah, this is 2020,

Doctors are staying up all night trying to fight this virus,

Yeah, you know I’m right!

Of course, this is 2020,

Police are wondering the streets,

Giving out on the spot fines,

To whoever crosses the line!!!

This is 2020,Victoria’s getting a lot of cases,

And lately you know we have been chilling in stage 4 restrictions.

Yeah you know, this is 2020!

Protests around the world!

“BLACK LIVES MATTER”

Yeah, we know its been hard,

This is 2020,

Students are being home schooled,

We don’t like it,

But were still doing it, so I guess we’re cool.

This is 2020,

Don’t forget Mr. Dan Andrews,

Him and his crew, have been staying up all night,

Coming up with new rules.

This is 2020,

Yeah, thank-you to all the supermarket workers,

Being there for us when we shop every day,

Making sure everyone can shop safely.

This is 2020,

All the teachers working hard,

Making all our lessons and answering our questions,

Yeah, we know they have been working hard.

This is 2020.

We might be in some hard times,

but never lose HOPE,

Never lose HOPE,

Never lose HOPE!

(A poem written by Zema 5E.)

During Numeracy this term, we explored Decimals and Probability. Students completed a range of tasks that involved online platforms and hands on learning. In the final weeks’ students are working on developing their own games that involve probability. We cannot wait to see their ideas and hopefully be able to play a few of their games!

It has been great to see students finding new ways to keep themselves entertained during these restrictions and promoting healthy lifestyles. We have even had students sharing their own Fitness routines! You might want to give this one a go! Thank you to AJ in 5C for the ideas.

AJ’s Home program:

1500 skips, 50 push ups,

50 dips, 150 sit ups, 75 crunches, 100 Russian twists, 250 squat jumps, 50 tri cep extensions with resistance bands 50 push ups on wall( chest touches wall feet far from wall) 25 push ups with feet on bench (incline) ball under chest must touch ball with chest.

On behalf of the Grade 5 teachers and students, we’d like to thank the hardworking parents who have supported their children with their learning and supported us teachers. We hope that every family has a safe and well-deserved break these school holidays, and we look forward to the new challenges, celebrations, and sunny days in Term 4.

Year 6 News

It has been tough for all of us at the moment but the motivation from teachers and staff have helped a lot. Their motivation has helped us complete tasks like a poem anthology in writing and many tests for maths. Our poetry unit has been the most exciting unit in writing so far, we have learnt about many different types of poetry like: limericks, haikus, free verse etc;

Operations in maths has been a tough unit for some of us but we have all come to enjoy it, we have focused on adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying decimals.

Roald Dahl has been the author we have focused on in reading, we did a book club on Matilda and have moved on to other Roald Dahl books. Now in reading we are looking at authors style and the type of writing Roald Dahl did.

Our specialists have all been fun. In science we have learnt about electricity and conductors of it.

In music we have been learning about the importance of music in advertisements.

In sport it has been about volleyball and the skills you need to play.

Lastly, in art we have been looking at the colour spectrum and how to use it appropriately.
