Prep News

Play Based Learning:

We have been looking at local places around our neighbourhood for leisure. The students have had the opportunity to role play, where they could pretend to be gym instructors or coaches.

They could also choose to go for a walk and explore their neighbourhood. Students have also been playing games with their families during their own leisure time.

Writing:

This term the preps have been practising writing sentences by using the sounds they have been learning to sound out all the words on their own.

Maths:

The preps have been using counters and drawings to help them solve addition and subtraction problems. We have now started looking at worded problems which are a little trickier.

Reading:

In reading we have continued to learn new letters and sounds. We have also been adding new tricky words to our tricky word tree. We have then been using the tricky words we have learnt to write sentences. Tricky words are words that can’t be sounded out easily and we have to just remember them as sight words.

Year 1 News

The grade one’s have been have a great time during their zoom sessions by having lots of different activities and games at the end of each daily zoom.

This can include zoomercises, stories and games such as ‘What am I?’, spot the difference and ‘Where’s Wally?’. Everyone takes turns to have a go and play some games together, which we have all loved!

Ending the zoom session with a game or fun activity has made it much more enjoyable, and it gives everyone a chance to talk to each other, even when we can’t be in the classroom together.

We thank all of the grade one team, including the pre-service teachers, for creating some great activities for everyone to take part in.

Thanks,

The Year 1 Team

Year 2 News

As the end of the term grows to an end, the Year 2’s have had a very productive Term 3 with their remote learning.

We have welcomed celebrating the first day of Spring last week during our Zoom Meetings and we have had the chance to see some gorgeous sunny days together with the strong winds and some rain.

On Thursday 10 September 2020 we  celebrated ‘R U OK?’ Day. It is our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, “Are you OK?” if someone in your world is struggling with life’s ups and down. This week during our Zoom meeting’s we will celebrate by wearing yellow and awaiting the winners from the mask competition. Check on your family, friends and neighbours by ringing or video calling them to see if they are doing ok and take care of you too!

Maths

We have been looking at Data and we have heard lots of feedback from Year 2’s and their families that they have had a lot of fun surveying family and friend and enjoyed having an excuse to ring them and survey them.

There were some great graphs created by students, see below…….

This week and next week, we will be looking at multiplicative thinking and sharing into equal groups. It is important that students are reading the question then going back and breaking down the question so that they know how to approach solving the problem. Students may experiment with different strategies to solve their problems and then decide which strategy is more efficient. It is important for students to show their thought process and show their teacher how they worked out their problem rather than simply writing the answer.

Spelling

We have been looking at the soft ‘c’ and ‘g’ in words and silent letters in words .When reading, Year 2’s have been practicing using our inferring skills by gaining clues from what they have read and thinking about what they already know (prior knowledge), to make an opinion about their reading.. Look at this amazing work…

Writing

Year 2 students continue to create narratives focusing on characters, settings and problems and solutions. We have been planning then writing. In grammar, we have learnt about adjectives, adverbs, speech and connecting sentences together.

Health

The Year 2’s have been exploring problems and solutions with gender identity and by taking care not to label activities as belonging to boys or girls and accepting differences in others. They explore what they could do when they or someone they know isn’t able to participate in a sport, they like because they have been told that only boys or girls do that sport.

Our first virtual parent teacher interviews via Zoom were a great success; it was so good to hear how students have adapted and have great routines in place for learning from home.

As Term 3 ends, once again, the Year 2 team would like to thank our Year 2 families for all their support and dedication to assisting our students with their learning from home. We miss interacting with our students in the classroom but we look forward to seeing their excited, happy faces during our whole class Zoom Meetings and small focus teacher groups. We look forward to more challenges in Term 4.

Kind regards,

The Year 2 Team
