What's Happening at OLA!

Pre-Kindy

The Pre-Kindergarten children have been discussing the importance of fathers in the family.  The teachers scribed the children’s comments on some activities they love to do with their daddy, and these are displayed in the classroom for parents to read. The teachers also used a quiz sheet for the children to answer some questions, to see how much they knew about their daddy. We are also making a gift for daddy but it’s a surprise!

Last week saw us weeding the vegetable garden and feeding the plants with worm whiz from the worm farm. Each day the children climb the obstacle course when they come outside to play, and luckily the weather was sunny on Thursday!  We have a weather chart to record the weather and the day of the week. The teachers took the opportunity to put the tumble mat outside for the children to practise somersaults and roly polys. Children develop physical competence through large muscle movements as well as fine muscle movements. Outdoor learning lends itself to practice using large muscle movements in; climbing, balancing, swinging, sliding and tumbling.

Book Week was so much fun at school this week. We visited the school library and met the librarian from Dianella Library. She read us two stories, sang some songs and we received a special Better Beginnings book bag. Of course, our favourite part of the week was dressing up and taking part in the book parade with the rest of the school.

Last Monday, we went to the Vasto Club in Balcatta to perform at the Performing Arts Festival. We sang two songs, Polliwog and Mickey Mouse March. We had lots of fun! Last Wednesday, we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption at OLA. The Year Ones held a Lucky Dip Stall that all the children loved. It was a very exciting day at the fete; playing games, dancing to music, having our faces painted and painting pet rocks. We enjoyed our whole school shared sausage sizzle too.

This week was Book Week and the theme this year was, Find Your Treasure. On Monday, we watched a musical incursion called, Treasure Hunt. On Wednesday, we got to dress up and walk in the Book Week Parade.

Week 5 and 6 have flown by and have been filled with festivities, fun and food!

The Year Threes enjoyed OLA's Feast Day. Our cupcake and cookie decoration stand was a hit with students of all years who decorated their creations with lots of different forms of sugar! We sold out of cupcakes and raised over $150. Thanks again to all of the parents for their generous donations.

In Health, we have been learning about healthy eating and looking at making healthier food choices. We were so lucky to be able to visit Grill'd in Subiaco and to DESIGN, MAKE and EAT our own burgers. This was the first time that Grill'd had ever opened up their restaurant for an activity like this, so the students felt very much like VIPs! All students had an amazing time and all of their plates were left empty! Needless to say - Grill'd burgers got the Year Threes approval! We thank Grill'd Subiaco again for this amazing opportunity.

Finally, Book Week had our classes filled with pirates, unicorns, superheroes and many other famous characters!

Wow! This week has been a whirlwind.  We started our week by performing at the Performing Arts Festival.  Our excerpt of Matilda was awesome according to our teachers and parents.  In fact it was sooo fabulous that we received the OUTSTANDING award, which means we came first in the Musical Division.  Mr McIntyre and Ms Knight are very proud of us and the effort we put in over the past weeks. So we started our week with Matilda and we will be ending our week with Matilda at the assembly on Friday.

In English, we are doing explanations and this week we read about how the human eye works. We deconstructed it and are currently writing our own version of it. Did you know our retina is like a projection screen, except it shows all of the pictures upside down! Our brain just automatically flips it back over. Such interesting things we learn in Year Five.
