IsOlympics

The IsOlympic Games are only 1 week away! Saying I’m excited is an understatement! I hope everyone out there is also looking forward to the day.

How to access the day:

The IsOlympic Games will be a virtual event that you can access via Google Classroom, Seesaw and the famous BNWPS Radio! Tune in to the radio from 9am to hear the opening ceremony and the house chants. All event instructions and scores will be on your child’s Google Classroom or on Seesaw. We are working to try and live stream the day via YouTube as well, but it has not been confirmed whether this is happening yet.

How the day will run:

Have a look at the schedule via this link. We have broken the day up into 3 categories to give the day some structure with a recess and lunch break included. The day will end with an early Assembly at 2pm to announce all the results from the day.

How to earn House Points for your team:

The idea for this day began as a way to create some Remote Learning community spirit. As a sports fan, I know nothing creates a feeling of community like a bit of friendly competition! So the day will be about having fun, coming together as a school community, as well as about helping your House be victorious on the day!

Every event you enter your results for will automatically earn your house 1 point, whether you score 1 point or 100! So the best way you can contribute to your team winning is by giving all the events a go.

You can earn bonus points by coming 1st, 2nd or 3rd in your year level. 1st place will earn your team 10 points, 2nd place will earn your team 6 points and 3rd will earn your team 3 points.

Finally, there will be 1 more way to earn your team points! Via the Beat Tom competition! Tom the PE teacher will also be competing in all the events on the day, if you are able to beat his score in any of the events you will earn a bonus 10 points for your team.

Please note: These results are based on an honesty system, could I please ask parents and carers to discuss what this means with your child before competing in any of the events, I would hate for someone to lose their chance of winning an event because someone entered results that were not true.

How to enter your results:

Results will be entered via Seesaw or Google Classroom. A results sheet will be uploaded for each student on the day on their relevant online learning platform. You will enter your results into the result sheet throughout the day. If you look at the schedule, students have 1 hour to complete all the events from that category, this is also the deadline to enter results for that category. So for example, all PE Skill Event results need to be entered by 10:30am, any results submitted after this time will not be counted. This is to make it easy for tallying results for 400+ students.

How to complete the events:

Event instructions and equipment have been sent out over the last two weeks for students PE lessons on Friday. These will be the instructions used on the day (plus some fantastic instructional videos made by the Grade 6 House Captains coming next week).

Foundation - Letters to Doctors & Nurses

In this tricky time of isolation, it is more important than ever to stay connected. One of the ways our Foundation students have been maintaining connections has been through writing letters. This term we have been practising our writing through drafting and sending letters to others. We have written to each other, our teachers, friends, Hannah and as well as Health Care Professionals.

A few weeks ago, our foundation students were tasked to write a letter to the nurses and doctors working tirelessly through these difficult times. We wrote letters to the nurses and doctors around Melbourne and beyond to let them know that we were thinking about them and that we are thankful to them for all of their hard work and efforts.

The letters that were produced were absolutely fabulous and they have been forwarded on to some of the hospitals across Melbourne. Click the link below to view all the letters we sent. A select few of our letters can be seen following:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CbwVoHv0EHgMLfrA49uf-CIksVmyktC0/view?usp=sharing

We have been lucky enough to receive letters and photos back from some of the wonderful staff at a few of the Hospitals around Melbourne. We are so stoked that we have been able to bring a smile and brighten the day of some of the people that are working so hard to keep us safe & healthy.

If you personally know any doctors or nurses that would appreciate our letters, please feel free to forward them on =)

Indigenous Literacy Day

Thank you to the BNWPS community for participating in Indigenous Literacy Day this week. The event was organised to share Indigenous song, languages, and stories with children. We had a visit from Wurundjeri guest Sue-Anne Hunter on BNWPS Radio. The day was also celebrated with a live event on Youtube to value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' first languages. Students participated in a Great Book Share (instead of last year’s onsite Great Book Swap) delivering a sanitised book to friend, classmate, or neighbour during Wednesday's family outdoor hour. This sharing of books was also a great way to 'keep us together during this time apart’ and given as 'an act of kindness’. It also helped to support resource awareness and sustainable practices among the community. Book parcels were wrapped in homemade wrapping paper and given together with upcycled cards.

The ILF is a charity of the book industry and focuses on three programs for remote children and their families: Book Buzz supports early literacy; Book Supply provides culturally relevant books and books in language; and Community Literacy Projects engages communities to write and illustrate their own books in the languages they choose. Donations to the Foundation fund these programs and provide books to communities that need them most.

How to Make a Better World

Have you been collecting your bread tags? There are some great programs that collect used ones!

(Images from: Seesaw, https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-07-26/recycling-bread-tags-into-bowls/11342298)

It’s so easy… Grab an old jar and pop your used bread tags in there. We’re hoping to collect these from families and send them off as a BNWPS collection. If you want to make it a family project, here are some links below for more information on what to do with them.
