Middle School Report

Year 9 & 10 News
It has been an action packed few weeks for middle school students especially those in year 10. Year 10 students sat their first set of formal exams and we were extremely pleased with how they conducted themselves in the process. They have also been busy finalising arrangements for work experience and making sure the correct paper work is completed.
Last week the students were engaged in a range of activities which focused on issues faced by young people today. We saw a presentation from a group called ‘Stop One Punch Can Kill”. We have heard of too many tragic events in the media recently where young people have died from a single punch. This group was formed after David Cassai was punched and killed in a senseless, violent and unprovoked attack on New Year’s Eve in 2012. His mother and friends formed the group in a bid to change the way people view violence and to challenge young people in how they can look after their friends when alcohol is involved. Although students were confronted by the presentation it was a high impact presentation which provided a powerful message about violence.
Other highlights of the week included workshops on safe partying and alcohol abuse, an African drumming workshop and a Zumba class. It was wonderful to see so many students participating, working together and enjoying themselves.
In the last few weeks, we also saw the launch of the ABCN Goals program. Twenty year 9 students have been selected to participate in this program. On May 26th they met their mentors and participated in get-to-know you activities. The mentors were all given a guided tour of the school and by all accounts were very impressed. Supporting the program this year we have Norton Rose Fulbright and for the first time American Express.
