From the Principal Class Team

Youth Day

On Friday 6 September, International Youth Day was celebrated at the College. Lunchtime was extended and a number of activities and fun events were organised by the Year 12 VCAL students. Fairy floss was on sale, students were invited to have their faces painted, a jump rope competition took place, and staff and students danced along to Music performances by the VET Music class. Mr Jennings, Ms Deb Payne, Mr St Pierre, Mr Buttigieg and Mr Steven Vo, all volunteered to be dunked in the ‘dunk tank’. Students lined up to throw balls at the target and see how many times they could drop the teachers into the cold water beneath. Thank you to all those who volunteered their time to support the celebration of Youth Days and to the Year 12 VCAL students and their teachers for their leadership and organisation of the day. Kwong Lee Dow Scholars nominations

The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program designed to support high achieving Victorian Year 11 and Year 12 students.  These students are selected in Year 10, they must apply and selection occurs based on the school’s endorsement and the student’s academic performance, community contribution and leadership skills.  At least one Young Scholar from each participating secondary school will be selected.

The selection panel will consider:

  • School endorsement
  • Academic performance: the student should be in the top 5 per cent of the Year 10 cohort
  • Leadership potential: students must demonstrate evidence of leadership, active citizenship and community involvement

Students selected may obtain the offer of a guaranteed place in an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne when they finish their secondary studies.  There is also the opportunity of an overseas scholarship during their University studies.  Year 10 students need to apply by 14 October.  A flyer containing all the information can be downloaded at:

Interested Year 10 students should speak with the Middle Sub School.

Staff vs Student House Points Debating Challenge

As part of the House Cup Challenge and, on the back of the recent success of the schools’ Debating Teams, there was a staff versus student debate on Tuesday 8 September. This was a highly entertaining event addressing the topic “mobile phones should be banned on public transport”.  The staff team comprised Lizzy Fitzgerald, Billy Rowland and Avril Good and, even though they put in a gallant effort, they were ultimately defeated by the student team of; Matthew Wos, Patrick Shaw and Cindy Mai. The debate was well attended by students and staff and both teams did a magnificent job of engaging the audience and providing plenty of laughs. House points were awarded to all student participants and audience members. Congratulations to all involved, special thanks to the adjudicators and timer.

As a result of the success of this event, we will be running another staff vs Student debate during term 4, giving the staff a chance to level the score.

These students will now represent the school at the Western Region at the end of term 3. To view the list of students please go to the Keilor Athletics page in this newsletter.

City Experience

A big congratulations to our Humanities team and Humanities KLA Leader Jill Donaldson for running an exceptional Year 9 City Experience. The Year 9 students met each day in the city to participate in a range of excursions, experiences and conduct geography field work for their upcoming Humanities assessment. The reports from the providers across the city which were involved in working with our students were overwhelmingly positive. A great job from all our Year 9 students!
