Middle School Report

As Term 3 draws to a close, students have enjoyed a number of excursions and events and are preparing for the semester tests and exams in Term 4.

Year 9 Events

Year 9 students have completed their City Experience excursion and are now collating their researched evidence for their group assignments. Students were involved in a number of different activities throughout the week, and their behaviour was noted by several members of the public as being something we should celebrate. A big thank you to Ms Jill Donaldson for organising the week’s events, to all Humanities teachers for their support of students during their time in the city, and to all members of staff who took the time to help the students with their research, tours of key attractions, and involvement in the scavenger hunt at the end of the week.

ABCN Goals sessions continue to run every couple of weeks, and students are now well under way in their setting and reviewing of short, medium, and long term goals.  They have spent time learning about interview techniques, financial planning and effective communication.

Year 10 Events

On Thursday 12 September, Year 10 students were involved in the Beacon Bonanza Day.  The day consisted of two sessions: one a ‘Speed Careering’ session, and the other a workshop style session organised by the Beacon Ambassadors and facilitated by Year 10 teachers.

In the speed careering session we were lucky to have guest presenters from a wide range of careers and  the students had the opportunity to hear about the experiences of these guests and find out what skills, qualities and knowledge they will need to pursue a career in those areas. It was really great to see all the students highly engaged with each of the guest presenters, and many of them said they gained valuable insights into working in the real world.

The workshop session, led by Inception Point and the Beacon Ambassadors, focused on goal setting strategies, effective communication and working in teams in order to achieve common goals.  The students then presented their own ideas and responses to a variety of scenarios based on collective planning and organisation.

The day was a great success with all the guests commenting on how impressive the Year 10 students were.

A huge thank you to all those that were involved in the planning and preparation for this event – especially the Beacon Ambassadors, Ms Lynda Vo and Mr Adrian McCall who worked incredibly hard to organise the event.  Well done!

2019 Speed Careering Report

The annual Speed Careering event was held on Thursday 12 September. Speed Careering is an opportunity for Year 10 students to have discussions with guest presenters from different business organisations and learn about the skills and knowledge required to enter their chosen career path. The business organisations included Future Connect, Virgin Australia, ABCN, Brimbank council, Pinsent Masaons Law Firm, the Smith Family, Victoria University, Victoria Police, WPC Group, Defence Force Recruiting, MEGT Apprenticeship, St Albans Heights Primary School and Western Health. Two paramedics and a patisserie chef were also in attendance.

During two sessions, Year 10 students had group discussions with guests or attended workshops which looked at how to create good first impressions, how to build strong resumes and how to develop sound job interview skills.

Important Dates

Parent Teacher Interviews – Wednesday 18 September

Students are reminded of the importance of making appointments to see teachers to discuss their learning success and progress.

The Middle School Coordinators would like to wish all the students and their families a restful break over the two-week holidays.  We look forward to seeing you all in Term 4 and celebrating all the successes of the past year.
