MGC students attend the Australian Youth Climate Coalition's Climate Justice Summit

On the 17th and the 18th of August, 9 students from the MGC environment team went to an AYCC climate justice summit. The summits purpose was to teach high school students how to create campaigns and run them in their own school. It was also to teach students about climate justice. Climate change is one of the largest issues facing the world today. Climate justice is the idea that people who are majorly contributing to climate change, aren't the most effected. For example, third world countries and Pacific Islanders, who might not have the economy to recover while their lands and home are being covered in water and destroyed by sea level rise, storms, floods etc, even when they are barely contributing to the problem.

Students also learnt that global warming (which is a part of climate change) is effecting more than some of us originally thought. Attached are some photos of students participating in a “hunger Banquet” where we were randomly allocated to a class and therefore given a lunch according to what the majority of humans on Earth eat.  Most of us were given a ball of rice in a lettuce leaf, some of us were given a salad sandwich and 1% of the group were given a Beef lasagne with salad and cake. Only the people with lasagne were allowed to sit on the tables and they were actually waited on! We came to the conclusion that there are many solutions to tackle these problems, like renewable energy, thinking about our consumption, living more sustainability and many more ideas that we have already implemented into the MGC community. On the second day of the summit we went to Parliament House where we were greeted by the honourable Lily D'ambrosio, Victorian MP for Energy, the environment and Climate Change. Schools shared their pledges, about how they are going to tackle climate change at their school and why they care about climate change.

Responses were things like...

I care about climate change because it effects everything and everyone.

I care about climate change because we have to protect the people and species that can't protect themselves.

And I care about climate change because, this is the only earth we have, and we have to look after it.

Overall we all had an amazing time and have come back passionate and determined to make a difference.

Thank you

Ancient Civilisation's Day

On Tuesday the 9th of August, all the year 7’s gathered to celebrate Ancient Civilisation’s Day. They have recently been researching and learning about four different civilisations, Ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt and China. They each worked in groups and investigated different subtopics to learn more about the civilisation. Each group constructed a poster in pairs about their theme and  produced a role-play to help teach the other students.

On the day each group took turns performing their role-play to their fellow peers and a class that had been learning about a different civilisation. Through their role-play they shared facts about what they had discovered and learnt about the different topics that their classmates had researched.

After that the groups that performed took their posters and shared what they had learnt with the other class, who had researched another civilisation. They then taught them about their topic in more depth, and shared some more facts. Once they had finished, the groups swapped and the other class performed and shared their own information.

To conclude the day, the students watched a movie to celebrate their hard work. It was a great day in which we all learnt a lot about different civilisations and how they lived back then. Everyone had a fantastic time and we would like to thank the teachers for organising this event and look forward to more in the future.
