Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to the 2018 school year! It was pleasing this week to have so many parents and other members of the school community attend our special assembly where we inducted our School Captains, SRC members and House Captains. Once again this year, we have an impressive group of students who have been elected to formal leadership positions. Councillor Christine Henderson, our guest speaker at this week’s assembly, provided our new leaders with an important reminder about the power of listening and developing an understanding of others in order to exercise effective leadership. In my address to the assembly, I reminded our students about the many opportunities that all students at CSC (not just those elected to formal leadership positions) have to develop their leadership skills.

As mentioned in the email I sent to all CSC families a few weeks ago, I was frustrated by technological difficulties which negatively affected some our enrolment and mentor interview booking processes during late January and I apologise again for the inconvenience this caused to our families . Thank you to the 99 people who responded to the survey we established in an effort to seek more feedback about our start-of-year administrative processes. I am currently working with our Leadership Team to develop a series of actions to address the problems we encountered last month.

Since our students have returned to school there has been a very positive overall “vibe” amongst staff and students, and it is clearly evident that productive learning is taking place in our classes. I particularly thank our school community for supporting the much stricter approach we have taken towards banning the use of mobile phones during class time. This has had a highly significant and positive impact on the learning culture in our classrooms.

Last week we held our annual CSC Swimming Carnival, which was a terrific day. Congratulations to Pennyweight House (overall champions) and the individual age group champions. Just as importantly though, I acknowledge the efforts of all students who competed and assisted with the carnival, the staff who ran the carnival and the parent helpers and spectators on the day. We always welcome and encourage parents to attend our CSC sports carnivals and other major events.

As I look ahead, we have a busy and exciting remainder of Term One which includes Year 7 Camp, the finalisation of our 2018 School Council, the Years 9 and 10 Steiner Camp, several interschool sports events and much more.
