3/4 MAIN PROGRAM

Robots are coming to life in the 34CK room. They have been built by the students and also programmed and provided with a home -the robot run. After a slow start (because we had other things to do too, like camp!) the robot run is becoming more visible and also more robust as the students solve engineering problems and investigate bridges, elevators and suspended ramps. This work will continue for at least the next term so take a look next time you walk past our windows.

3-4 LEARNING COMMUNITY

The 3-4 and 5-6 Learning Community have enjoyed a stimulating and productive term.

Projects and Main Lessons have been augmented by some inspiring incursions and excursions.

Last Friday we observed the National Day Against Bullying and Violence. Students discussed how to identify bullying behaviour; how to combat it; and explored some of the potential motivations for bullying. Students will continue to discuss strategies for managing difficult social situations as part of the PATHS program.

It was wonderful to acknowledge and celebrate the myriad cultures within our community as part of Harmony Day on Monday. Thank you to Cultural Infusion for their contributions toward this event, including the dance workshop for some of the junior school classes.

I wish everyone a safe and restorative break and look forward to seeing you in term 2.

'WELCOME SWALLOWS’

The ‘Welcome Swallows’ is an environmental organisation dedicated to raising awareness about the global impact of climate change. It was founded with the view of getting young people involved in environmental conservation. We produce a monthly newsletter which provides current facts and information about environmental issues.

We welcome new members to our organisation. Membership is free. If you would like to join, please contact our teacher, Kate Schmeiszl, at: schmeiszl.kate.m@edumail.vic.gov.au

Our next public meeting will be at recess on Tuesday, April 12th 2016. We meet in the school canteen.

Thank you,

Nina McCarthy-Gray, Max Tait and Calima Janssen from Class 5K.

5/6 MAIN PROGRAM

Grand Prix

Years 5/6 were lucky to visit RMIT's 'Driving Learning' pavilion in the Industry and Innovation Precinct at this year's Grand Prix.

Students tried on virtual reality headsets, sat in FSAE cars and learned about robots, electric cars and 3D printers. We got to see flashes of Formula One race cars, but the Air Display stopped the kids in their tracks. Many thanks to the Collingwood staff and parents, and the friendly students of RMIT.

Steiner Class 5

Kate and Martin’s class have been learning about Indigenous seasons in Australia and India as part of their main lesson work.  They have also been listening to stories and decorating eggs for Easter.

Class 6L Sailing Camp

On 7th March, Class 6L went to Lake Eppalock, near Bendigo, for our sailing camp.  This was the same week we experienced the hottest March night on record – on Tuesday night in our tents we were definitely feeling it!  But, it was also lovely weather for sailing.  The wind was ‘just right’ and we spent four days on the water.

We camped at the Bendigo Yacht Club right near the lake.  Class 6L students are expert campers so setting up camp was done with very little help from adults (although the extremely hard ground proved a problem for some of the pegs!).

Over the course of the camp the students learnt all about jibs, main sails and the importance of having them on the same side at all times and also putting your centre-board up at the right time!  They spent some time on sailing ‘theory’, learning the rules and regulations as well as learning what all the signs, signals and symbols we see in our different bays and waterways mean.  There was also a session on learning to tie all the different knots.  According to most of the children, the most fun was capsizing!

At the beginning of March, our class five and six students had the chance to spend time in the high school. In the Steiner English class, they wrote a poem about the changing of the seasons from summer to autumn. Everyone came up with a poem filled with beautiful imagery and imaginative rhyme. Here are two examples of their work from Dubhessa Bryant and Calima Janssen.

Sports Gala

Collingwood College participated in the local School Sports Gala, held at Richmond Primary School and in our very own gym. There was a great display of energy, enthusiasm and teamwork by the kids during the round robin games of Basketball, Volleyball, Softball and Newcomb ball. Congratulations to our teams, you did a fantastic job! Thanks to Richmond West Primary School, Richmond Primary School, Yarra Primary School and Trinity Primary School and a very big congratulations to all of our teams!
