Bill Corey Tribute
The Endeavour community was saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Corey, OAM, on 10 October at the remarkable age of 101. Bill was one of the last surviving members of the legendary ‘Rats of Tobruk’.
Born in Riverton, Bill grew up in Walkerville and went to Adelaide High School. He was working as a butcher when he enlisted in June 1940 at the age of 22. He served with the 2/43rd Australian Infantry Battalion in the 1941 Siege of Tobruk in northern Africa during World War II. He later saw action at El Alamein and in Syria; he also spent time fighting the Japanese in New Guinea and Borneo.
Since 2012, he had been a regular visitor to Endeavour to speak with students about his wartime experiences. As Bill’s son Don recalled, his father’s mission late in life was to tell his stories so that younger generations could better understand the trauma and devastation of war.
Despite all he had experienced in war, Bill never thought himself a hero. As he would modestly say, “I’m only Bill.”
In 2016, Bill was asked to join the Governor, Hieu Van Le, and the-then Premier, Jay Weatherill, to open the ANZAC Centenary Memorial Walk on Kintore Avenue in the city. He cut the ribbon and officially opened our State’s major contribution to mark the ANZAC centenary.
In April this year, Bill opened the College’s ANZAC Pavilion and only last month attended the annual Veteran's Day where he spoke with Year 10 History students. As ever, his testimonies certainly left their mark on them and they, in turn, relished their time with Bill. He couldn’t help but impress all of us with his unfailing optimism, humility and humour.
Bill was an extraordinary human being who lived a long and extraordinary life. He will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to meet and get to know him. He was a true gentleman who will be recalled with pride, admiration and gratitude.
The College community extends its sincere sympathy to Bill’s children, Don and Dianne, and their families.
Bill’s funeral was held on Friday 19 October. I had the privilege of attending on behalf of Endeavour College, along with two senior students who had close associations with Bill in recent years, Liana and Joel. The funeral was attended by around 250 other people including the SA Governor, Hieu van Le.
The words of one Year 10 History student, responding to the news of Bill’s passing, echo the feelings of the entire Endeavour community: “Rest in peace, Bill. You have touched the hearts of everyone around you and for that, and your service, we cannot thank you enough.”
