Ministry Message

C. S. Lewis famously said: “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”  C. S. Lewis passed away many years ago, yet these words are still alive in our minds.  The power of his words we find not just found in its eloquent style, but in its profound assessment of the human heart.

Our hearts are always searching; searching for meaning and fulfilment. We often presume that we can satisfy this quest for significance in the things that the world throws at us and advertises as the most fulfilling. For some it is a career, for others money, for someone else family. Whatever it is, no one can possibly question the value and importance of these things. However, studying testimonies of some honest men and women who have lived before us, we can discover that even those who have arrived and succeeded, in any possible way that this world can offer, deep down still experienced unsatisfied cravings of their souls. C. S. Lewis argues that the reason behind this experience, is our attempt to satisfy our deepest desires in the wrong place, or even the wrong world.

Jesus says in John 10:10, I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

The reason why we cannot satisfy the deepest cravings of our souls in this world, is because this world does not possess anything beautiful enough and desirable enough to meet the expectations of our souls.  Jesus is teaching us that it is only when we turn our heart to him, and desire him more than anything else that we can find the beauty and satisfaction our hearts have always dreamed of.

In closing, let us consider the powerful words of St. Augustine in his confessions. He states, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you."
