Outdoor & Environmental Education

VCE Units 3 &4

17 students travelled to Halls Gap for a 4-day exploration of the Grampians National Park. Day 1 was spent touring the local Indigenous centre where students learnt about the Djab Warrung tribe and were able to taste some of the local bush tucker such as Emu, Kangaroo and Wild Berries. Day 2 saw the students hiking to the summit of Mt Rosea (6km) before an unfortunate injury ended the day prematurely and also, sadly, the trip. Some accidents are unpreventable (as was in this case) and I commend all students on their behavior and attitude during this time .

VCE Units 1 & 2

11 students travelled to Apollo Bay for a 4-day hiking adventure along the Great Ocean Road. Day 1 saw the students undertake a surfing lesson in Lorne, before getting their last minute packing instructions before setting out on their hike for days 2 and 3. Students carried their own hiking packs weighing in at 15-20kgs and covering approximately 35km. Their trek from Cape Otway lighthouse to Johanna beach snaked its way through local Heathlands, Rainforests and coastal terrain before ending on the famous Johanna Beach. On the way home the students also got to experience the impressive Redwood Forest located in the small town of Beach Forest. Unique to Australia, the 80m high trees were a great spectacle to finish the trip on.

Year 10 Outdoor Education

16 students travelled to Tidal River for a 3 day surf camp at Wilsons Promontory.  Day 1 and 2 saw the students hike around the picturesque beaches and to the nearby summit of Mt Oberon before starting their crash course on surfing. 2 sessions of surfing was enough to gain the interest of students who all said it was the highlight of the camp, pledging to continue to learn in their own time. Despite a few hungry wombats and kookaburras around the campsite, the camp was a successful introduction into the world of outdoor camping.
