Reading
The Reading and Viewing curriculum during this term has been structured to further develop students’ understanding and learning experiences. They will revise and be exposed to a variety of CAFÉ reading strategies to assist in the accurate reading and comprehension of various kinds of Letters, Emails and Poetry. These strategies will include comparing and contrasting, determining the author’s purpose, make and adjust mental images, adjust and apply different reading rates to match the text and tuning into interesting words.
As part of the Level Three Home Reading program, it is an expectation that students read for fifteen minutes each night, and record this in their diaries. It would be wonderful if you could support your child’s reading, and assist them with their comprehension by discussing the book with them. The following questions are a great way to start a conversation:
- “What emotions is the character feeling? How do you know?”
- “As you were reading, what pictures did you create in your mind?”
- “What do you think the outcome will be? Why?”
Speaking and Listening:
Every opportunity will continue to be given for the students to further develop their speaking and listening skills. This will be through presentations of their Poetry, group discussions and circle times when each student contributes to a particular topic. Furthermore, learners will be encouraged through oral presentations to share their Home Learning and other forms of learning in front of their peers.
We encourage confident, clear speaking and positive body language throughout each presentation. During single or group presentations, the students that are listening are ensuring that they are providing active listening and continuous eye contact with the presenter. The students are then asked to provide positive feedback and feedforward to the presenter on how they performed and what aspects they could improve on, to build their confidence as a speaker.
Writing:
In Term Three, will be developing a deeper understanding into the structure of Letters and Emails. Throughout this unit, we will be looking into the purpose and language features of a range of letters, such as personal letters, business letters and emails. The students will have many opportunities to write letters with a real purpose. During the second half of Term Three, students will be focusing on Poetry. The four forms of poetry that we will be focusing on are, Haiku, Limerick, Couplet and Quatrain Poems.
Spelling:
As part of the Spelling program in Term Three, the Level Three students will be encouraged to continuously expand their vocabulary, and this process will be assisted with the use of our Spelling Inquiry Model. In addition to this, students will continue to use the “Look, Say, Name, Cover, Write, Check” strategy to learn their personalised spelling words each week as one of their Home Learning tasks.
This term, we will be focusing on rimes and onsets, connectives, and also continuing our research of consonant digraphs, and present and past tense words.
Mathematics:
In Mathematics, we will begin Term Three learning with the domain of Number and Algebra where the students will deepen their Understanding of Fractions, Decimals, Money and Finance. In the second half of the term, we will move to Measurement and Geometry domain and explore Shapes, Mass, Volume and Capacities. Each unit of learning will start with the language, ensuring our students have the vocabulary to explain their thinking when furthering their Reasoning skills. Throughout each unit, we will continue to upskill our students by developing their Fluency and Problem Solving skills using a range of hands-on and rich learning tasks. We will continue to have regular group/individual conferences with our students to set and track the progress on their SURF goals.
Inquiry:
Term Three Inquiry will see our children exploring the question “Are words necessary for communication?” They will learn different forms of communication such as art works, images, music, dance, body language and drama. Our students will also explore and research other cultural traditions and stories. They will then learn to present those stories with the aim to promote Interculturalism in GWPS. It is essential for our learners to build healthy connections with one another in relation to other cultures and respect these relationships to maintain a sense of belonging within our community. Throughout this term, they will be explicitly taught the skills in Media Arts and Intercultural Capability. They will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop run by professional performers.
YCDI:
In YCDI, students will be exploring resilience, what this means and how they can show this in a range of different situations. Zones of self-regulation will also be investigated, as well as language around emotions and traits, and mindfulness strategies. Focusing on these will assist the students in developing their personal and social capabilities.
