From the Principal

Well done and thank you to our entire community for the way you are continuing to manage a very challenging term. Staff continue to work hard to support students in the transition back to on-site learning. We so appreciate the work families have done to support their children during remote learning.

Course Counselling

Thank you to all our families who attended our ‘Year 9 electives information session’ and our ‘VCE information evening’. Course counselling closes this week. Please contact the college if you have any queries or concerns.

As part of GEC's commitment to supporting our students through their learning, we recognise the important role that families can play to ensure that support continues at home.

Susan is Australia’s foremost expert in the area of cyber safety and young people. She was the first Victorian Police Officer appointed to a position involving cyber safety and young people.

Her knowledge is unparalleled and leaves audiences shocked at the reality of the online world. It is a wake-up call to even the most switched on parent and is delivered with Susan's famous 'no nonsense' approach.

We want our parents/caregivers/guardians to tell us what they think!

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents/caregivers/guardians think of our school. The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents/caregivers/guardians (previously known as the Parent Opinion Survey).

It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, student engagement and experiences of remote and flexible learning. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. . All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year, the Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 19th July to Friday 3rd September.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek.

J Voice

Recently Nathan Loyer (8F) and David Loven (10C) presented the results of their year-long cross-schools research project to James Merlino. James Merlino, Minister for Education, and UJEB responded to acknowledge the wonderful work they have completed together with other schools in the area. It is wonderful to see our students working together to help make a positive difference in our community.

These are the words of James Merlino – Victorian Education Minister:
Hate and bigotry has no place in our schools, or anywhere in our community for that matter.

Since coming to Government we've taken significant steps to address anti-Semitism in our education system including teaching every Victorian Y9/10 student about the Holocaust.

As part of this ongoing work, we funded the UJEB - United Jewish Education Board to create a student advisory group called J-Voice to tell us about their experiences of anti-Semitism and share their ideas about developing safe, constructive and practical strategies schools can use to stamp out anti-Semitism.

Today J-Voice presented their research findings to me and their hard work highlights just how important the student voice is.

This opportunity has allowed them to communicate ideas and influence change that directly affects young Jewish people and their peers.

I am so impressed with the thought and effort that has gone into this important project – from the survey design to the interviews, and the preliminary recommendations themselves.

I’m looking forward to receiving J-Voice’s final report next month and looking at how we can make our schools fairer and safer for all Victorians.
James Merlino

These are the words of Itzik Sztokman – Executive Principal UJEB:
An incredible day at UJEB as our wonderful J-Voice committee took to the stage in front of the Department of Education & Training, Victoria and Education Minister James Merlino to present their findings and recommendations about the Jewish student experience at Victorian government schools.

The J-Voice committee, comprising of Year 8-12 students from 5 different government schools, have spent the past year compiling their experiences and research about being Jewish at a government school to report directly to the department of education. Their presentation today and their upcoming report aim to provide recommendations for new initiatives and changes to take place in schools across Victoria.

A huge Kol HaKavod to the students for presenting with professionalism, passion and initiative and we're so excited to see how the final report comes out.
