Mathematics @ GEC

Challenges as Opportunities

Challenges can be viewed as opportunities for making progress in our learning. At GEC, many such opportunities are given to students in all subject areas.

In Maths, opportunities are given for interested students to participate in challenging competitions such as Maths Olympiad, Maths Talent Quest and Melbourne University’s Maths Olympics.

Additionally, all students in Years 7 to 9 participated in the Australian Maths Competition (AMC) on Wednesday 4th August. The AMC is an engaging 30-problem competition that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students’ everyday lives. It is open to students in years 3 to 12. The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) has 25 multiple-choice questions and five questions that need whole number answers.

On 22nd August, two teams of selected students from Years 8, 10 and 11 will be competing in the School Maths Olympics (SMO) organised by the Melbourne University Maths and Statistics Society.  School Maths Olympics (SMO) is a fast-paced, teamwork-centred annual maths competition for high school students. This year, SMO will take place virtually on Sunday August 22nd at 1:30-3:30pm as part of the 2021 Science Festival.

In this competition, student teams will tackle around 25 interesting maths problems in the span of one hour. You can check out past SMO problems at:

Besides the medals and prizes that will mailed out to the winning teams, this competition is a great opportunity for students to discover the joy of mathematical problem solving in a collaborative environment.
