Teaching & Learning Update

5 period day progress and SABRE

With the change in timetable structure to 5 x 60 minute periods each day, student and staff survey data has showed the positive impact the change has had on teaching and learning at GEC. The change in timetable structure intended to allow more time for students to complete tasks in class. The majority of students have found more time to complete tasks and practice what they are learning in class time as a result of the change to 60 minute periods.

Changing the timetable structure to 5 x 60 minutes each day, staff have found greater opportunity for teachers to be able to complete all stages of GEC’s SABRE Instructional model, particularly the review and evaluate steps. Glen Eira College believes it is important to engage students as soon as they walk through the door with an engaging ‘Starter’. Teachers now have extra time to breakdown the ‘Aim and Success Criteria’ of the lesson so students know what it looks like to reach the objective of the lesson. When engaging in the ‘Body’ of the lesson, teachers are spending more time with each individual learner and differentiating the work. The ‘Review’ step allows teachers to make links with the content back to the aim and success criteria. With the extra period length, teachers now have time to effectively ‘Evaluate’ student understanding and tailor future lessons to meet the needs of all students.
